A spatula works better — that way, I can control the thickness of the icing.  - Microwave the buttercream for 5-10 seconds before applying. This gives a nice gloss to the buttercream, makes it easily spreadable, ensure thin layers, and avoids patchiness in the color.  - Scrape off with a slightly warm scraper. Wipe it clean after every pass to keep your buttercream smooth. - Chill the cake before cutting off the top lip.
