7.2K reactions · 820 shares | Here’s a list of things that I don’t do, after having been an EMS Lieutenant at a Fire Department. In regard to a second story window escape ladder- I don’t have a particular brand that I recommend over another. I got mine on Amazon, and they run $40-$65. They are perfect to store under a bed, or at the bottom of a closet. They don’t take much space, and are easy to use, in an emergency. Candles, I’ve always had a safe fear of. When I was little, our cat caught her tail on fire. We noticed before her, so we put it out, immediately. But, if that cat had run through the house, w a tail on 🔥… again… it would’ve started a massive house 🔥 (luckily the cat wasn’t hurt, it only singed some hair. But it could’ve been tragic, on many levels). Candles w pets or animals is like leaving the room w a candle lit- for me. It’s just a risk, I’m not comfortable taking. As far as battery disposal- I always tape (I use scotch tape, but any sort of blockage of the + and - sides prevents an electrical circuit being made. And yes, even “empty” batteries, often have enough charge left in them to cause a spark/electrical current. As far as dryer vent cleanings- it is recommended to be cleaned at least EVERY YEAR. *I misspoke when I said, every two years. As far as fireplaces… if a chimney has a tiny crack or flaw, an ember can start a fire in that crack, and the fire would grow, in the home’s walls, before anyone even realizes there IS a fire. I’ve seen this happen, too many times. So, now, it’s something, I just don’t chance, unless I have had my chimney maintained and inspected. Having a couple fire extinguishers, in your house (and shaking them upside down, every 6 months, for maintenance), as well as keeping a burn blanket, in your kitchen, are great “fire tools”, you can keep in your home, for an emergency. These are just some of my own personal tips, advice, and neurosis’s since being a first responder. They’re not for everyone, and that’s ok. To each their own. 😘💜✌🏻 | Alexandra Fisher
