When urban change accelerates, especially due to external forces, cities are likely to face the crisis of identity. Iran is a country that has undergone very different situations throughout its history, and its cities have respectively responded through different ways of survival. One of these cities is Isfahan, which includes a district called Jolfa: the first designed neighbourhood of a city in Iran. Jolfa as a place to settle Armenian immigrants to Iran in Safavid era is the most viable historic urban space with 2% effete, and it is the heart of social life in contemporary Isfahan. The main goal of this research is to find out how Jolfa has adapted to changing situations. Thus, the process of site allocation for Jolfa, its development and current position is studied. In response to the key role of ecologic and social aspects in Jolfa this research is focused on the relation of socio-ecologic asp...

Field measurements and computer simulations were carried out on East-West (E-W) and North-South (N-S) oriented streets in Isfahan, Iran. Through the field measurements in July 2014, 17 different streets were studied, followed by 15 perturbation scenarios (urban design alternatives) simulated by ENVI-met. The study showed that there is a significant and positive relationship between the Sky View Factor (SVF) and the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) values. Comparison of the meteorological parameters within different street orientations showed that the effect of the SVF on the E-W streets was more significant than in N-S streets. Furthermore, greenery arrengement and building heights showed different impacts on the outdoor thermal comfort streets with different orientations.

Innovation and progress of human civilization result from a change in our thinking patterns, thus, potentially transforming the present into a creative future. Accentuating the role of creativity in design even more than other disciplines pushes one to underpin the understanding of creativity as a key role player in architecture. Furthermore, by identifying the basic principles of our ingenuity/creativity, researchers might be able to enhance this ability in the future. A key point in "creativity" is the role of previously gained experiences, which cause expanding the inventory of experiences. According to accepted definition in different disciplines, creativity is no more than new combinations of previous ideas. The paper explores different effectual parameters correlated with creativity in architectural design including notion of conceptual blending, improbabilist and impossibilist creativity, tolerance of ambiguity and its correlation with creativity and creativity aided tools and interfaces. At the end, we suggest necessary experiments to obtain empirical results for some speculations that are discussed in the paper. Also, practical approaches will be suggested to apply the results in pedagogy of architecture.

The cooling effect of urban green spaces can be divided into two components; cooling intensity and cooling extension. These two components are affected by different factors. This paper provides a review of research on the impact of urban greening on temperature and on the parameters that have an effect on that. Based on this review, two categories that have an effect on cooling intensity and cooling extension were identified: internal factors and external factors. These play an important role in the effectiveness of urban green spaces. As internal factors or indexes, the following were extracted; Size index, Shape index, Vegetation species and Tree canopy coverage are the most common indexes in most of the studies. The external factors can be divided into climate and surrounding properties. A discussion of the reviewed studies reflects the impact of each index on the cooling intensity and cooling extension. The existing methods and techniques for determining these indexes have also been considered in this paper. As such, this study is helpful for designers and planners for decision-making during the design phase.

Endangering human health, dealing with these impacts become the main concern of the decision-makers in different cities. Urban green spaces as a useful method to mitigate temperature have been suggested in different studies. Based on 41 studies, this current paper introduces cooling intensity and cooling extension as two parameters of thermal mitigation and acknowledges the cooling effect of green space, with tree, equal to 0.2-6.8°C. The cooling extension varies between 0.2-1.4 °C per 100 m showing a wide range of cooling extension due to varying factors that affect this distance. On the base of field studies, two categories of indexes were extracted, internal and external indexes. Internal indexes such as size index, shape index, species and canopy cover ratio. Size index is one of the important issues under discussion concerning the cooling effect. Although even small green spaces can decrease the temperature, most of the studies indicated that the larger the park the stronger the effect. Parks smaller than 3ha were not always cooler than their surroundings while larger parks were consistently cooler. Shape index is a factor with a negative correlation with cooling intensity and a positive correlation with cooling range.

Iran is a country encountering very different situations in its historical life and its cities choose different ways to survive. One of these cities is Isfahan. Isfahan has a district called Jolfa, the first designed neighborhood out of the city in Iran. Jolfa as a place to settle Armenian immigrants to Iran in Safavi era is the most viable historical urban space with 2% effete and the hart of social life in contemporary Isfahan. Finding the methods of adaptation in different situation which Jolfa experienced is the main goal of research. Thus, the process of place locating for Jolfa , its development and current position was considered. Because of the key role of ecological and social aspects in Jolfa, This paper was focused on the relation of these aspects and built environment. The majority of Iran’s land is located in the climate where not only supplying water is most struggle but also inhabiting in the situation was deeply based on innovative methods of managing recourses. Therefore the form of capital in this land, unlike Europe, was water rather than land. From innovative methods one was built creeks diverged from rivers that called Madi and another one was choosing green space among built environment. Water canals apart from ecological functions as an infrastructure coalesced social interactions. In this research historical procedure of development and the role of water are concerned and positive and negative points have been evaluated. Although, some wrong decisions threaten this unique neighborhood, sense of community is the main factor surviving Jolfa now. This article used historical documents and finding the foot print of history in current city in a field study; in addition, GIS was applied as a method of study. This article goes beyond the shape of city and focus on social aspects of it. Each city and each part of city has it unrepeatable history; this survey on Jolfa extracts some values and policies for other cases from this experience as a result.
