Thomas G. Plante, Ph.D., ABPP is the Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. University Professor, professor of psychology, and directs the Applied Spirituality Institute at Santa Clara University. He is also an emeritus clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has published 29 books, over 250 journal articles and books chapters and maintain a private practice in Menlo Park, CA where he specializes in spirituality integrated assessment and psychotherapy mostly with Roman Catholic and Episcopal Church populations. He completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at Brown University, his PhD in clinical psychology, from the University of Kansas, and clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. Perhaps there is no one in our society more despised and vilified than sex offenders, especially ... more Perhaps there is no one in our society more despised and vilified than sex offenders, especially those who sexually violate young children. And during the past decade perhaps no particular subgroup of sex offender has been more despised than those who are Roman Catholic priests. We need to be attentive to the state-of-the-art facts, best practices, and create policies and procedures to keep those who might harm children away from children. To do otherwise is foolish and harmful. Yet strong opinions, advocacy, and hysteria sometimes gets more attention than actual evidence-based quality research and practice which is not ultimately in the best interest of child protection efforts. This brief paper reviews lessons learned in working with sex offending clerics within the Roman Catholic tradition.

Interpersonal and intergroup relationships seem to have steadily deteriorated in recent years, wi... more Interpersonal and intergroup relationships seem to have steadily deteriorated in recent years, with an increase in the lack of civility and decency along with a greater willingness to attack and cancel anyone who does not agree with one's cherished perspective on numerous matters. New popular phrases such as cancel culture, public shaming, air rage, and gaslighting have entered the common vernacular. Ignatian spirituality offers several helpful strategies for dealing with these contemporary divisive conflicts in a productive manner. These include (1) seeing God (or the sacred) in all things, (2) striving towards kinship with others through the pathway of civility, hospitality, and solidarity, and (3) managing conflict with accommodation, humility, and the expectation of goodness in mind. This article introduces and provides examples of these three Ignatian principles that can be employed in all challenging relationships, including both personal and professional as well as psychotherapeutic ones. They can be utilized in a secular or spiritually minded manner as well. Having more tools to improve relationships is especially needed now.

The world of today is not the world we recognize from not too long ago. In Living Well: Doing the Right Thing for Body, Mind, Spirit, and Communities, Thomas G. Plante, PhD, ABPP, a practicing clinical psychologist as well as a professor of psychology at Santa Clara University and a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University Medical School, offers a series of brief, thoughtful, evidence based, and research supported strategies to manage the challenges of life today. He begins with the important role of ethics in organizing and centering our lives, and then applies commonly embraced ethical principles to personal and spiritual well-being, health and fitness, intimate and other important relationships, parenting, and education. He also identified the technical challenges that such data-intensive science would pose for scientists and the key role that IT and computer science could play in enabling future scientific discoveries. The term "eScience" was coined in the year 2000 by John Taylor, when he was director general of the UK Research Councils. Taylor had recognized the increasingly important role that IT must play in the collaborative, multidisciplinary, and data-intensive scientific research of the 21st century and used the term eScience to encompass the collection of tools and technologies needed to support such research. In recognition of the UK eScience initiative, Jim Gray called his research group at Microsoft Research the eScience Group, and he set about working with scientists to understand their problems and learn what tools they needed. In his talk to the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the U.S. National Research Council in 2007, Jim expanded on his vision of data-intensive science and enumerated seven key areas for action by the funding agencies:
