I hope you're keeping toasty in this cold weather. Here's a little something to help warm you. I painted this rose at 31 x 41cm (12 x 16 inches). It was a commission for John, a friend of my parents.

Pansy Orchid in watercolour

It took hardly any paint or water to subtly build up the pale white textures on the petals of these Pansy orchids. And you might be surprised by just how little pigment and water it took to paint their crazy markings too. Tubes of watercolour paint last me for years because I squeeze out blobs, allow them to dry on my palette and then use a wet brush to pick up a little of the colour as I go. It's an incredibly economical medium to paint with 🎨

You may have noticed that I often gravitate towards painting flowering plants, or the fruits they produce. But the non-flowering plants can be just a beautiful. The structure of this feathery fern was very enjoyable to paint.
