Working vertically (easel, paper on the wall etc.) helps children to build strength in their hands and arms and positions their hand in a way that promotes effective pencil/tool grip. This vertical work also requires children to “cross the midline” (middle of their body) while working which promotes bilateral body coordination that serves so many functions in everyday life.
