I first saw this on the account @artofteaching and I liked how straightforward it is, but also presents a challenge for beginners. I teach my students to create the gradient without any blending tools for this exercise…I don’t even want to get into the whole tortillion/stump versus pencil blending controversy 😆 but I do think it’s valuable to learn how to vary your pressure and layer just using pencils. This is such an easy exercise because you don’t need a worksheet You can show a completed example on the projector or SmartBoard, or do the exercise with students using a document camera.
