Train & Railroad Semaphore Signals
The shape of the semaphore blade does impart information to the engineer of a train. The blades generally came in four shapes: square, rounded, pointed (out), or fishtail (pointed in). Square end blades were commonly used as an absolute signal, such as a home signal. To forewarn an engineer of an upcoming signal, distant signals were employed, and they usually employed a fishtail shaped blade. Round-ended blades were often used as train order signals.
