This felt hat was made by Hawes Von Gal Co., Inc., New York and retailed in Charleston by C. C. Plenge, Sole Agent. Charles C. Plenge was listed in the City Directory as a retailer of hats, caps, umbrellas, tobacco, etc. from 1874 through 1910 at 45-47 Broad Street. Created in 1849 by Thomas & William Bowler, the Bowler was originally protective gear for gamekeepers.
