The nutritional status of preschool and school children suggested many shortcomings independent of social class and nutrition type (individual, mass nutrition). Generally, the nutrition of town children was better than that of rural children, and signs of deficiency of certain vitamins and mineral components were found in a lowe per cent of the former children. The food rations of the studied children contained too low consumption of milk and dairy products, vegetables and fruit, with high intake of fats, meat and its products, sugar and sweets. The daily food rations contained low amounts of calcium, vitamins A, B and C, with excess of phosphorus and fats. The nutrition of school children depended on year season, social class and education of parents. The most frequent faults included inappropriate timetable of meals, their poo...

Three-week old Wistar rats were used in this experiments. The rats were administered during two weeks a diet containing 1% of crude fibre from bread, grits, green beans, white cabbage and carrot. It was found that the biological method gave results similar to those obtained by the enzymatic one.

It was found that our results obtained by Hellendoorn's method are overestimated and therefore are somewhat doubtful. For this reason the AOAC method can be recommended as more accurate.

Male Wistar rats were supplemented antioxidants per os (α-to-copherol - 2 mg/d, ascorbic acid - 12 mg/d, β-carotene - 1 mg/d), both individually or in combination of 2 or 3, for 14 days. During experiment, half of the animals in each group (n=8) were subjected to treadmill exercise for 15 min at the speed of 20 m/min, to induce oxidative stress. Vitamins in rat plasma were assessed by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results suggest that vitamin E and C supplemented simultaneously may provide some benefit during physical exercise. The significant influence of administered α-tocopherol acetate and physical exercise on the level of α-tocopherol in the plasma was observed. Thus only the concentration of α-tocopherol in blood may be treated as a...

The eradication of bacterial overgrowth with antibiotics is the first-line treatment. However, focusing only on the antimicrobial effects without taking care to improve lifestyle factors, especially dietary patterns, may predispose patients to intestinal microbiota dysfunction. The objective of this study is to determine whether the current recommendations regarding nutrition in IBS are suitable for patients with SIBO. A narrative literature review was carried out using databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. Recent studies indicate that dietary manipulation may have a role in alleviating SIBO gastrointestinal symptoms. A low FODMAP diet proposed for IBS may promote a negative shift in the gut microbiota and deepen the existing state of dysbiosis in SIBO patients. Supplementation with soluble fiber can lessen the symptoms in IBS and SIBO. Targeted probiotic ther...

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship of somatotype (body type) with the consumption of selected cereal and milk products. The research was carried out in 2015. The study involved 75 women of different backgrounds. Among them were 25 women with ectomorphic physiques , 25 women with mesomorphic ones, and 25 women with endomorphic ones. To assign the women to the appropriate somatotype, the Rohrer index (RI) was used. An equal number of women of each of the three somatotypes was selected. The survey consisted of two sections: the first was concerned with anthropometric and socio-demographic data, as well as the eating habits and health of the subjects, and the second was a frequency of consumption questionnaire, in which the cereal products were divided into 13 groups and the dairy products into 14 groups. In addition...

Many dietary compounds participate in the functioning of the immune system, while vitamins D, C, A (including beta-carotene), E, B6, B12, folic acid, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, amino acids, n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and intestinal microbiota are crucial in various types of defence processes. There has been no evidence that consumed food and its compounds, including those with pro-/prebiotic properties, play a significant role in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection or alleviating its course. However, in terms of the nutritional value of food and the prevention of dysbiosis, recommending a varied diet with a high proportion of plant-based foods and an adequate amount of animal-based foods has a sound scientific basis. Malnutrition, underweight and obesity are considered independent and prognostic risk f...

The vitamin was administered in doses of: 20 or 40 μg/day/rat. With respect to the control (fructan-free), the diet containing 5% of inulin decreased (p<0.05) serum thiamine level when the lower daily vitamin dose was used, and oligofructose had no influence. It was observed that all experimental diets decreased urine thiamine level (p<0.05), which remained stable until the 9 th day of the experiment. Then, after next 3 days, the urine thiamine increased, except for the 1-5 group with 20 μg daily thiamine dose. The diet with 5% of oligofructose increased (p<0.05) average daily thiamine excretion when rats consumed 20 μg of vitamin per day. Oligofructose was demonstrated to be capable of improving thiamine nutritional status in thiamine-malnourished rats.

They are a natural component of the colon microbiota as well as commonly used probiotics in functional food. OBJECTIVES The effects of the storage time and prebiotic type (inuline or oligofructose) were studied in banana-milk drink after fermentation by Lactobacillus casei KNE-1 on the thiamine and riboflavin concentrations. MATERIAL AND METHODS The material for the study was fermented fruit milk drinks: banana-milk prepared in laboratory conditions and fruit milk drinks purchased in a local shop, as a comparative material. The thiamine was determined by thiochrome method and the riboflavin was determined by fluorometric method. RESULTS The storage time after the end of the fermentation process did not increase the content of thiamine and riboflavin in fermented banana-milk drink more than the output level. The addition of oligofructose signific...

Nowadays the most common method of somatotyping is the Heath–Carter method, which calculates the somatotype base on 10 anthropometric parameters. Another possibility for evaluation of somatotype gives commonly used bioelectrical impedance analysis), but the accuracy of the proposed formulas is questioned. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the possibility of applying an artificial neural network to achieve the formulas, which allow us to determine the endomorphy and mesomorphy using data on body height and weight and raw bioelectrical impedance analysis data in young women. The endomorphy (Endo), ectomorphy (Ecto), and mesomorphy (Meso) ratings were determined using artificial neural networks and the Heath–Carter method. To identify critical parameters and their degree of impact on the artificial neural network outputs, a sensitivity analysis ...

Objective The aim of the present study was the assessment of water intake from food and beverages by free-living elderly in Poland. Materials and Methods The study was conducted on 138 volunteers (women and men) at the age of 60 to 90, recruited from Warsaw and Płock Universities of the Third Age and different informal groups from the same cities. Food and beverages consumption data were collected using the method of records for 3 days, including two weekdays and one week-end day, in the period April – June 2012. Results Average values of total water intake in the present study indicated that women meets of the European Food Safety Agency recommendations (2000 mL/day), but men did not (less about 200 mL/day than the recommended 2500 mL/day). Taking into account the criterion of water per energy in...

The tea infusion (cup of tea) itself contains phenolic compounds with anti-oxidant properties that constitute 30% of the dry mass of tea leaves responsible for a health promoting effect on the human body. OBJECTIVES To estimate the determinants and amounts of black and green tea consumed by a selected population group, along with their polyphenols intake from tea. MATERIAL AND METHODS A survey was conducted of 281 subjects in 2012 from the Mazovian region of Poland, recruited from social-networking sites which had been sent a web application questionnaire (Mini-ankiety.pl). RESULTS Subjects were aged 18-56 years, of whom the majority (73%) were aged 21-30 years. City dwellers constituted 86%, whilst those remaining were from small towns (14%). Black tea was drunk by 80% of whom 39% did so daily, whilst green tea was drunk by 72% of whom 17% did so daily. Determinants affecting the amount...
