General elections were held in Malaysia from 22 to 26 April 1982.[1] People voted in all 154 parliamentary constituencies, each electing one Member of Parliament to the Dewan Rakyat, the main house of Parliament. State elections were also held in 293 constituencies (except in Sabah and Sarawak) at the same time. This was the first election for Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister.
Barisan Nasional won the election, securing 132 out of 154 seats. Voter turnout was 74%.
