Egypt, Fayum, Mummies Portraits

In Roman Egypt (30 BC - 324 AD), artists adapted natural drawing patterns with the ancient tradition of making portrait masks for mummies. Personal paintings were often drawn while the subject was at the beginning of life and was suspended at home until the person died. This practice continued in northern Egypt well during the early Byzantine period
