In keeping with island heritage, the design uses natural materials. The main structure is a steel ribbon, from which kiln-dried oak treads are cantilevered. Paying homage to the building’s history, fixings are visible and bespoke square nuts fix treads to the outer stringer.

Oak treads and risers with a sweeping inner edge are cantilevered from the main wall. With no visible structure, the luxury of the materials are visible from all angles. An oval profiled leather-clad handrail follows the curves of the landing and flows down the staircase, finishing into the floor with a signature Bisca newel. Forged solid bronze uprights with an organic form bring additional softness to the already curvy staircase.

Our solid stone cantilever has a helical sweeping soffit, bringing both simplicity and elegance to the design. The solid stone detail continues around a curvaceous landing edge. The balustrade is hand-forged bronze with oval uprights and leather-clad handrail. A matching handrail on the opposite side of the stair flows around the curved wall, this is supported by simple bronze brackets and has concealed LED lighting.

The staircase structure itself appears to float enhancing the sense of space; and the luxury ash treads were designed with a significant overlap, to offer a secure feel when moving on the stairs. A 3D liquid bronze handrail tops a curved glass balustrade which wraps itself around the central coil. The treads are fully supported by the structural spine and float freely from the surrounding walls, augmenting the panoramic vistas as you wind around the steps.

The treads and risers are from oak, with a deep overhang on the nose, which allows the inclusion of lighting above the risers. Oval profile timber handrails are leather-clad and rise in sweeping curves from feature newels at the foot of the stair up to top the top floor. The balustrade is from #mildsteel that is forged and tapered into slim and elegant uprights with a bronze finish to match the interior scheme by Kathryn Levitt Design

The open rise design allows daylight, precious in the long months of a Scottish winter, through to the hall beside a utility room. Simple, tapered mild steel spindles form the balustrade. The spindles transition into a parapet wall on the first floor, providing privacy and visual separation from the ground floor. An oval, solid oak handrail sits on top of the hand-forged uprights.
