Scaly leg mites are tiny microscopic parasites that burrow under your chickens scales, and eat the chicken’s tissue. It’s very uncomfortable! If it goes untreated, chickens can be in a lot of pain, become lame and even lose toes. If one chicken has scaly leg mites, the whole flock should be treated. The coop should also be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. How to identify: • Scales on the legs feet and/or toes are raised • Feet look crusty or scabby How to treat: • Soak the feet and legs in warm water for 5-10 min. • Scrub feet and legs with a tooth brush to remove debris • Use oil to cover your chickens legs feet and toes.
