This is a detail from the ceiling in the Louvre museum. This is actually fairly typical of what I saw in some of the historic sites. The French monarchy certainly didn't go in for the "less is more" concept. If there was a free centimetre, they covered it in some kind of painting or relief, and then sprinkled some gold all over it.
