Sand entire piece with 220 grit 2. Clean (my favorite is TSP mixed in a spray bottle, but any cleaner will work) 3. Prime (my current favorite is Rustoleum spray primer, it’s faster and easier than brushing on and I’ve been super happy with the adhesion) 4. Use wood filler to fill any damage or dents.
