Work and Play in Modern Art

This module considers representations of labour and leisure in major works of European art from the mid-18th to the end of the 19th centuries in relation to the ideological and material conditions that shape them. We explore the functions of art as a symbolic language in the construction of social meaning, and the shifting attributions of virtue and vice to various kinds of work and play. Particular attention will be given to the activities available to women.
