Howdy people! I'm making a game called Small Saga about a little angry guy. It'll be out Soon™ on PC.
Was really tickled by Small Saga's spin on making loot chests more dangerous. Instead of a shapeshifting mimic, it's a big spider! Like a trap-door spider that uses the chest like a protective shell and uses money as projectiles.
As we also saw in the game, they're intelligent and can be reasoned with! Offer them a bit of food and not only will they not attack, they'll make it rain.
So, like the nerd that I am, I decided to try and translate it into D&D 5e. Gonna surprise the heck out of my little level 2 players. Sure, everyone expects a mimic, but no one expects a spider in a box!
These unusually intelligent arachnids nest in chests or other containers. They wait patiently for prey to surprise, paralyze with their bite, and drag into their little lairs, adding to their collection of treasures. Clever nobles and minor crime lords bribe avarice spiders to be guards for valuables, with careful instructions about who – and who not – to devour.
Hi Darya! I was wondering if you had any updates on when the Mac version of Small Saga will be available?
I've taken a break from work while I sort some life things out (and to stop myself from burning out!)
I should be back in the swing of things in a few weeks, so I think there's a good chance the Mac version will be ready some time in February.
I just wanted to start by saying I love this game’s music, it’s so good! Anyway, I was listening to the game’s soundtrack on steam when I realized that A New Home and Recital for the Lovers shared the same tune (I don’t know what the proper music term is), and that made me look at the others and realize Recital for a Ghost shared the Map theme, and some others.
Are there any other leitmotifs or shared tunes that are in the game? Bruce’s are pretty easy to find because of the bagpipes, but I was trying to figure out what Siobhan’s The Homecoming Jig shared and got stuck.
There are a quite a few leitmotifs! You can hear Verm's, Siobhan's, Bruce's, and Gwen's at key moments for each character. The "homecoming" tracks are fun takes on three of those. Other leitmotifs include Leo's, Lamia's, the Thimble Guard/palace, and a teamwork tune that's used throughout.
There's also this tune that I wanted to have a feeling of nostalgia or vague familiarity, so I borrowed it from a piece I'd previously used in another game.
I love the soundtrack design in Small Saga. Its basic premise is a wainscot-fantasy-meets-sword-and-sorcery sort of deal with mice and rats wielding lighters and pocketknives and other human-made tools as "god-weapons", played more or less 100% straight, with the obligatory blend of plinky faux-medieval ambience punctuated by thumping orchestral bombast for the big events, and then out of nowhere you get hit with a boss fight accompanied by this:
I want you to try and imagine, without context, what you could possibly be fighting that would warrant this music.
May I please ask a question about titans in the lore of Small Saga and Needle Knight? What is the difference between Wyrms and Basilisks? Are wyrms venomous snakes, and are basilisks constrictor snakes, like pythons? Also, in Needle Knight, is the story about the mouse and the basilisk a reference to your game, “The Basilisk”, which has different endings? Also, I am very sorry for the disturbance. Thank you for your time.
Are wyrms venomous snakes, and are basilisks constrictor snakes, like pythons? I don't explain the difference anywhere, so as far as I'm concerned any fan theory is as canonical as my own. And your theory is really good! It sounds like a plausible taxonomy that neatly fits with the lore.
is the story about the mouse and the basilisk a reference to your game, “The Basilisk [Dialogue]”
Yes.
Also, I am very sorry for the disturbance.
Not at all! Thanks for playing.
I have attempted twice to make this recipe from @sketchylogic’s game Small Saga
I tried to translate the recipe to
1/2c of flour
1 banana
1/4c almond flour
2tbsp cinnamon
and a splash of milk because it needed moisture.
My first attempt looked okay but didn’t taste great because it needs sugar in it so it doesn’t just taste like flour and bananas
So I endeavored to try again!
I made sure to add 1/4c of sugar to the recipe and kept everything else the same. And while it definitely tastes better…
I definitely just made a mush that tastes vaguely like banana bread. I also need it noted that when I put the batter in the pan there was enough vegetable oil to cover it. I don’t know where the oil went.
I’m sure my mistakes were plentiful and were mostly in my portioning and utensils used. But I have one more banana to try again with this week. So we’ll see. I need to try and make this work in real life because I want to eventually try with the other recipes in the game.
Gifted my boyfriend a copy of your cool videogame and watched him play with a bunch of folks. Needless to say, we've all enjoyed your story and characters quite a bit!
Now, an inquiry: Has there been any fan art/creations that have really blown you out of the water in this small window since release?
Is Lance's skill tree functional?
It is not. As cool as "meta stuff" is, developing things players are supposed to experience always took priority.
I've seen some people edit their save files to do things like resurrect dead characters or give Verm 9999 attack, which sometimes works, but sometimes causes bugs because none of that is intended.
Anyway. Here's young Verm using adult Verm's ultimate attack.
Finished Small Saga just yesterday and I think it might be one of my favourite games of all time, definitely in my top 3 of the year at least.
Loved the characters, the story, the themes, the musics, the humour, the secrets... I’ll definitely have to show it to friends who can speak english (and replay it because I just realised from rewatching the trailer that I completely missed the fishing minigame like a goof).
I know this is still pretty early since you’ve published the game but I’d gladly give my support to any future projects you’ll make.
Cheers and such
Thank you for playing! I'm glad it's left an impression. You're not alone in missing the fishing minigame. The environment didn't have enough clues of where you could walk or jump. That's on me!
