There was once a time we lucidly dream, then we wake up from our slumber. -Excerpts from the Morpheus Chronicles

I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence

Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.

Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.

u r absolutely right I have SO many complaints about Windows omg.

For anyone who'd like to follow along, I'm gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they're more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I'll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.

For the Device Setup

"OOBE" stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that'll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don't have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here's how you get to it:

  1. Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
  2. Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
  3. I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Now when you're brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don't have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.

Group Policies

You don't have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can't do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.

I'm gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this

It'll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c

Start Recommendations

In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the "Turn off" ones bumped to the top.

Here's what you should set:

  • Turn off user tracking: enabled
  • Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
  • Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
  • Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
  • Do not search Internet: enabled

Windows Spotlight

Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content

  • Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
  • Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled

Cortana

In the side menu, this one's back at the top under Computer Configuration. You're gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search

  • Allow Cortana: disabled
  • Don't search the web or display web results in Search: enabled

News and Interests

In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.

  • Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled

Microsoft Account Login Nudges

When you don't use a Microsoft account they'll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can "get the most out of your experience" *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let's just open up the regular settings.

Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ノ u are done.

Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity's sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol

This is all extremely good information, thank you very much for the addition!

I endorse this as an IT technician. I do this to every new Win11 device I set up.

As a bonus, run Chris Titus Tech's debloat tool on it.

It allows you to add tools, remove/disable shitty parts of windows, and easily change some settings. My default is running the preset for a desktop/laptop and applying security update settings, but there are so many options to customize. I used it on my personal laptop.

I seriously laugh whenever the left tries to bring up the "conservatives have no empathy" bit. Like I saw what the left said at minority voters who didn't vote for Kamala and lemme tell you I know EXACTLY which side of the political spectrum lacks empathy.

Yeah we can just add empathy to the ever growing list of words leftists don’t use correctly.

We have enough empathy to want to actually promote ideas that will benefit everyone and not just temporarily make certain groups of people feel better at the expense of others. Plus we don’t viciously bully people for having different perspectives.

THIS is why the Board of Education needs to be shutdown, RIGHT NOW!!!!!

🤡🤡

As long as you arrive at the conclusion they tell you is correct, the facts do not matter.

Seems about right for how they see the world. 😂

This is like saying that if I take a cake, remove the flour, eggs, and butter then add in cement and rocks then I can make concrete out of cake.

I mean...I (think I) get what they're trying to demonstrate - taking from one number and adding to another as an interim step to make subsequent calculations easier. 10+3 is easier to add together than 8+5, blah blah blah. I do this when adding larger numbers in my head.

But I can't figure out why it's being taught this way. It's not a skill needed when learning basic arithmetic.

If so, the phrasing is so clumsy as to constitute educational neglect.

Anyone with any degree of English reading proficiency would see that question as being How can you get 8+5=10 as though they were asking kids to justify such an illogical statement. For generations now, the left has been trying to reinvent education: replacing what works with what they think should work and replacing the simply effective with the unnecessarily complex. It hasn't worked and has only made things worse.

And the correction just proves the student is right because how the instructor got to 10 was by adding 8+2. Then they added 3 to that equation to get 13. That is not an example of 8 and 5 “making” 10 because you can’t make 10 by adding 8 and 5. You can make it by adding 8 and 2, which is what the instructor did.

This is a literal example of 2+2=5 because if you just add those two then one more you get 5.

This is so over complicated. The best shorthand I ever learned for math was in 3rd or 4th grade and it involved picturing dots on the numbers. So a 5 has 5 dots on it, a 7 has seven. If you can't do 7+5 in your head you start with seven and count the dots on the 5 one by one until you get 12. I still use this whenever my brain freezes while I try to do math in my head. It's not as fast as other methods, but it's very simple and it doesn't require you to train your brain to ignore logic.

Hate that you can’t criticize or even dislike porn without being called a prude or a puritan. We as a society are so brain rotted

No one said you cant dislike porn. Just like you can dislike alcohol. But going around claiming anyone who partakes is evil and 100% of those involved are trafficked, and all the world's evil are the fault of the thing you dont like will get some negative reaction. You sound like the the common stereotype of vegans and people dont like that.

Funny enough, you would have a MUCH better argument targetting alcohol instead. But the US already had a period of trying to ban that and it didnt work out so well.

I feel this is super important. Criticism can be done correct ways. And let me TELL YOU how well the, "You're going to hell" worked out for the christians.

"If I was alive back then, I would have housed every suffering black slave."

Sir, you cant even be bothered to house the homeless person on your block, much less look him in the eye. You couldnt be bothered to house a single immigrant. Add on the bacon bits of actual laws banning it and massive social backlash from your peers, you definitely would not have housed and protected black slaves back then.

I recently saw this in action.

"I would welcome every immigrant fleeing ICE into my home and protect them."

and like a few posts down was "There's so many homeless people in my area now. They're ruining my favorite spots😟"

Like...You have people in need right there. Go ahead, invite them into your home. Invite them all.

"Sorry, the homeless people don't have enough Victim Points™."

Reminds me of this stupid post a while back;

I love how their baffled silence at the stupidity is supposed to be a victory. The person might've meant something like a government training program.

The obvious difference is that the person in the story wasn't actually virtue signalling. Just saying that homeless people should meet the same standards as everyone else.

And they were actually doing the things they said everyone should do.

If I've got spare cash, I give any homeless person I run into $20. I've had to reduce that recently due to my own needs for saving, but I also don't make outrageous claims like these fuckers.

Virtue Signalling is tiring. But also calling it out is unpopular because people mistake it for not caring about the issue.

Gee, why wouldn’t Trump supporters trust folks who’ve spent the past decade blindly repeating lies about Trump which have been completely wrong, including things that are worse than murders, like calling illegal immigrant detention centers “concentration camps” and claiming Trump supporters are all Nazis?

Or “Elon Musk was totally giving a Nazi salute because he held his arm straight for fractions of a second!”?

Or spent most of the election season not actually disavowing the two assassination attempts on Trump, and spent more effort fearmongering about Project 2025 than Trump’s actual platform? Trump literally got shot, and the mainstream left couldn’t say it was wrong*.

Clearly those Trump supporters are all just bigots.

I think my favorite part is how the anti-Trump woman presented no evidence, and the comic doesn’t actually show Trump shot the dad. We don’t even know if it was murder, or dad caught a stray.

The woman doesn’t look around to see where the shot came from, she just assumes she was right.

And we’re supposed to agree with her.

* Unless you count doing logical backflips to claim the shooters were actually right-wing. And even that was less of a disavowal and more deflecting blame.

This comic is even sadder now that this one news story is going around, about that one Trump supporter, who’s wife is getting deported.

What did he do? Fume at Trump? Blame Biden?

No. He said, he doesn’t regret voting for Trump, will look at their legal options and if all fails, move with her to her home country. So completely taking accountability, something that is a completely alien concept to the left.

“You should not support principles if you are personally inconvenienced by them,” really says more about the people saying it than the people it’s directed at. Of course, the real point is “I take pleasure in your suffering, because I think it’s your own fault.”

genuinely wondering do straight women actually enjoy getting mouth fucked? Like there’s no way you’re letting that thing go anywhere near your mouth. We need to have a conversation about how that position is actually sexually degrading and is centered on male gaze and pleasure. Yes women are allowed to enjoy sex but the sex standards simply depend on the subjugation of women. Can’t believe humiliation and dehumanisation of women is being repackaged as “empowerment”.

If it wasnt clear, men do this with each other and dont give themselves victimhood status lile you do. Men arent going around saying it's the dehumanization of men.

If a woman doesnt want to perform a sexual act, just like a man, she can say no.

And that's not even getting into women's sexual desires and preferences.

Ya know, the fact that the logical inconsistency of being against the death penalty but being willing to use the Death Note yourself has nearly half the votes really demonstrates the problem with a lot of discourse on this website and in progressive spaces in general

I don't trust the government to kill people under an elaborate system of checks and balances and appeals. But I'm a good person, so I should be trusted to unilaterally decide who lives and who dies, without any legal structure whatsoever.

I marked no, but on hindsight, how do you not?

How could I have the power to surgically execute certain individuals without harming innocents and ethically not use it?

In this day and age of the internet, we have the full names and birthdays of some truly heinous people. How can you have the ability to safely kill them without harming any innocents and not use it?

How do you have the ability to potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives, maybe millions of lives, and just not try?

I'm the exact opposite: I believe there are people who deserve the death penalty but it's not my place to decide exactly who since vigilantism is bad and you can quickly turn "hunting bad guys" into "my personal vendetta list", especially without the mediating factor of due process of law. (I do understand some people are wrongfully convicted, but the rate is probably a lot lower than some rando with a magical notebook.)

>>But I'm a good person, so I should be trusted to unilaterally decide who lives and who dies, without any legal structure whatsoever.

>How could I have the power to surgically execute certain individuals without harming innocents and ethically not use it?

  1. Murder. The word is murder. You would be murdering people in cold blood.

2. It's actually very easy to not kill other people, actually. Most people do it all the time.

>How do you have the ability to potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives, maybe millions of lives, and just not try?

The fact that you're speaking in vague, high-minded abstracts AND think the issue is black and white is rather concerning, and I would not trust you with that power.

If I trusted anyone with it.

I would immediately burn the book, if that was feasible.

None of your tags are an actual argument or defense of your moral stance.

I'm pretty sure the folks going "murder is great if it's against bad people!" are, in fact, on shakier moral ground than "no, murder is always bad".

I literally just said I would destroy the book, if possible. I can't even think of anyone I'd want to murder, on account of murder being wrong.

Making up a world where I'm lying so you can feel less bad about wanting to murder other people is kinda pathetic. Especially when the only people they can think of happen to be folks it's The Current Thing for the left to hate.

Can't even imagine your opposition enough to know who they might wanna kill.

And calling other people self-righteous is nakedly hypocritical.

Go away, and don't talk to me ever again.

"you're a liar if you didn't at least THINK of using it on Trump."

Okay, first off, fuck you.

Second, no, I never considered using it on anyone, not even a politician who does bad things. Yes, they're horrible people, and yes they shouldn't be in power, but we have progressed beyond the era of political assassination.

If you're wanting to kill politicians cuz you decided they deserve to die, guess what, it IS a great moral failing on your part. You do not get to decide who lives or dies. And by doing so, you'd set the precedent that it's okay to kill your political opposition if you attribute suffering to their name.

Which is. Not. Okay. No matter how you justify it to yourself.

This whole post is an argument in the hallway between people who were paying attention in class and people who were doodling on their binder cover in Wite-Out pen.

Unfortunately, I think that description can be attributed to most of Tumblr discourse around politics. If not all of it.

If you'd ever willingly use the Death Note you:

A.) Do not actually oppose the Death Penalty.

B.) Are exactly the kind of dumbass that'd end up like Light Yagami

The comments in this post just get worse and worse for every single written entry, usually going by, "LOL, I wood never ever use the friggin' Murder Book™ in my life, but if I did, I would TO-O-O-O-OTALLY kill every genocidal tyrant, depraved rapist, monstrous pedophile, and corrupt billionaire! I prolly won' be hailed a hero tho. XD XD XD"

This was painful for me to write by the way.

'Tis a fickle mistress using a website nearly populated by potentially power-hungry freaks (hopefully less than 10,000 users).

I know that I would probably use the Death Note if I had the opportunity, which is actually a huge part of why I'm against the death penalty.

I wouldn't be able to resist that kind of power, even though I know it's wrong, so if I can't trust myself with that kind of thing, why in the fuck would I trust anyone else?

congrats on having more self-awareness than the average tumblr user

Everyone says that they'd use the Magical Fiction Death Note to Kill this or that governmental body or CEO or terrorist leader or convicted criminal that totally got away with it....

And they probably would.

The only real problem they FAIL to understand is that they totally wouldn't stop there and not even in like the grandiose ways the characters in Death Note thought about using the book.

Cause like I can totally see someone using the book to kill (Insert Political Figure they hate who's evil, take your pick from across the spectrum) during the first week.

And then by week two they're googling a license plate of someone that cut them off in traffic or buying doxed info for someone that insulted them online.

I don't think that these people realize that there is actually official documentation for what's going on and a lot of these places and that the stuff isn't made up but they're so desperate for their side to be correct that they have to.

Money most of the time has to be earmarked for a certain reason. That reason often is required before money gets sent anywhere. Otherwise the government is just sending free money at request to any and all organizations asking for it. This while FEMA can't do their fucking job and help Americans who are actually an emergency situations. Including the flooding that happened, and the wildfires which were bitch boy Gavin Newsom's fault.

The fact that Americans should have to take a back seat and have their tax dollars into the trillions go overseas and to random places that don't need it as much as Americans in emergency situations tells you all you need to know.

So, let's just say the premise behind this tweet is true. If the money isn't going to dildo seagulls on Venus, are you guys at all concerned where we're sending billions of dollars? Or is that just too boring for your TikTok brains to handle?

Well it's politics. It's not about improving country, it's about going against everything the side you dont like says and does.

I remember when Trump asked the UN to decriminalize homosexuality and even magazines for gay people ran articles about how he was "not respecting muslim cultures" by...asking them not to murder people for being gay.

The issues dont matter so long as you can make the other political party look bad.
