What's been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course at UK so far has been PHI 305 Healthcare Ethics, which I took with Dr. Bursten in the fall of 2024. I truly believe this class will be beneficial in my journey as a future healthcare provider. The course challenged me to explore my own moral reasoning and critically analyze how I would respond to ethical dilemmas in healthcare. We also examined historical events that were morally unjust, which added another layer of depth to the discussions. Overall, the class was not only intellectually stimulating but also engaging and fun, and it provided an opportunity to connect with my peers on a deeper level.

Why did you choose your program, and/or how does (did) your program contribute to your career goals?

Initially, I started in a different major unrelated to MG-CAFE, but I discovered my true passion through conversations with the MG-CAFE ambassadors. I wasn't feeling fully engaged or excited in my previous field, and that's when I found Agricultural Medical Biotechnology. What drew me to this program is the unique opportunity to get involved in research early on, which perfectly aligns with my career aspirations in dentistry. The chance to explore my future pathway through hands-on experience at the UK College of Dentistry has been invaluable. It's an aspect of the program that isn't always highlighted in other majors outside of MG-CAFE.

What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?

My advice for incoming freshmen in the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment is to get involved from day one. Whether it's joining clubs, attending events, or just connecting with classmates and professors, those early relationships will be incredibly rewarding. Don't be afraid to try new things—attend school outings, go to games, and make the most of every opportunity. College goes by fast, so make it count by building connections and experiences you won't forget. The people you meet and the moments you create will be some of the best parts of your college journey.

Tell us about the city of Lexington. What surprised you? What places/people do you like most?

What I love most about Lexington is that it offers the best of both city life and country living. Coming from a small town, I appreciate that I can still take a peaceful drive through the countryside when I need a break, all while being in a vibrant city. My perfect day in Lexington would start with breakfast at Doodles, followed by an energy drink from Dutch Bros. I'd spend some time browsing the farmers market, then grab lunch at Dad's Favorite. Afterward, I'd go shopping at The Summit, catch a men's basketball game at Rupp, and finish the night with Lexington's favorite late-night spot‚—Raisin' Cane's!

Considering all you have learned in your area of study, is there a common misconception or something you wish everyone knew about the subject? In other words, what does everyone seem to get wrong about your major?

A common misconception about my major is that it's only focused on careers with animals or plants. While that can certainly be a pathway, my major actually offers a wide variety of career opportunities! One of the things I love most about my area of study is the flexibility it provides‚—you're able to choose courses that align with your future goals, whether that's in agriculture, healthcare, or other fields, and still meet the necessary prerequisites for grad school programs. Even though I may not work directly with animals or plants, agriculture is truly integrated into almost every aspect of life, and it's a field that touches everything around us!

Have you completed an internship, job, or been involved with a club that has been especially meaningful to you?

I currently work as an undergraduate researcher at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, collaborating with the Dean of Research and her team. I never expected that my time at the University of Kentucky would lead to such an incredible opportunity, and it has been truly rewarding. In this role, I've had the chance to be involved in current research projects, as well as contribute to my own. Gaining hands-on experience this early in my college career has been invaluable. What I've enjoyed most about this position is the opportunity to build connections within the College of Dentistry, which I hope will help me build confidence as I apply for the upcoming admissions cycle.
