Why did you choose your program, and/or how does (did) your program contribute to your career goals?

I chose my program from my experience in FFA, through this it gave me an interest in animals to work with them in a professional way. Along with the opportunity to take ASC 300, meat science, helping me find my end career goal that involves the meat industry.

What's been your favorite course and why?

I have had two courses that have been my favorite. ASC 101 and ASC 300. ASC 101 helped with the fundamentals and understanding for future in depth classes along with very fun and hands on labs we had to attend diving into further depth of the reproduction tracts of a sow and cow along with the digestive tract. ASC 300 was also one of my favorite courses, it helped me to be a better consumer when going to shop at my local grocery store, along with learning new and better ways to properly cook different types of meat. Along with learning the process of how a live animal gos to the cuts of meat in the grocery store.

Have you completed an internship, job, or been involved with a club that has been especially meaningful to you?

I had a job in a butcher shop over the summer, this also helped guide me into the meat industry and how I want to implement the things I learned and did into a future job. It was the best experience for me as I got to work in different aspects of the shop including the front with customers and the office learning how to handle all the paperwork and the best way to keep it organized for that type of industry.

  1. A study tip I have found very useful and positive is writing out your notes or any concepts that are a struggle either on your iPad or a piece of paper to look at it again and have to think about what your writing to better understand the material again.
  2. A good thing to have in college is a small group of friends and always make time to be with them, even if you are just studying with them, it helps you and them get through the hard stressful times in college.
  3. Always make time for yourself to do enjoyable things like going to get a sweet treat or coffee every once in a while, don't drown yourself every day doing homework and studying. Treat yourself to something good after working hard.

Tell us about the city of Lexington. What surprised you? What places/people do you like most?

The biggest surprise of Lexington is there are a lot of things to do around campus with friends that are cheap and don't require a lot of planning. A place my friends and I have really liked going to paint pottery at one of the local pottery painting places and they have usually reasonable prices. A great place to go is Keenland on scholarship day it is a cool and fun way to get away from campus and its free entry on scholarship day.

Considering all you have learned in your area of study, is there a common misconception or something you wish everyone knew about the subject? In other words, what does everyone seem to get wrong about your major?

With animal science, there are so many job opportunities other than becoming a veterinarian. There is jobs in extension, the USDA, production, and research. Everyone has the opportunity to do something cool and amazing.

Tell us about your favorite professor, advisor, or other member of the UK family that has been especially impactful during your college career.

My favorite professor here at UK is Dr. Rentfrow. He teaches ASC 300 and he was very easy to talk to about any topics regarding the course to clarify any confusion, along with helping me to understand and find a possible career option. Also posting different job opportunities that are part of the meat industry.
