Data kualitatif yang dihasilkan dari wawancara, observasi, maupun dokumen biasanya sangatlah banyak jumlahnya dan perlu diberi kode agar mudah menganalisanya. Proses coding sebenarnya cukup rumit dan memerlukan keterampilan tinggi. Sayangnya, hanya sedikit literatur yang menerangkan tentang coding dalam bahasa Indonesia. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk membantu peneliti-peneliti muda di Indonesia untuk melakukan coding. Dalam artikel ini dijelaskan definisi dan karakteristik penelitian kualitatif, langkah-langkah sebelum dan ketika coding dilakukan, siklus coding, penggunaan memo, cara melaporkan coding karya ilmiah, dan contoh-contoh penelitian terdahulu yang menggunakan coding serta limitasi dari proses tersebut. Viral spread prevention is essential as a feasible intervention strategy. The aim of this study was to determine the level of community knowledge, attitude, and perception towards Covid-19 in Aceh province. An electronic questionnaire was shared with 1,058 participants in the Covid-19 seminars organized by IMANI-PROKAMI Aceh Chapter (Islamic Medical Association and Network of Indonesia - Perhimpunan Profesi Kesehatan Muslim Indonesia), which were held between August 30th to Sept 20th, 2020. The questionnaire collected demographic data as well as data related to knowledge, perception, and attitude towards Covid-19 prevention. There were 1,058 survey participants, 841 (79.5%) of them were women, 366 (34.6%) were between 26 and 35 of age, 705 (66.6%) had a college degree and 540 (51.0%) were government employees. Medical doctors conduct many health care and promotion activities after a disaster. However, ther... more Medical doctors conduct many health care and promotion activities after a disaster. However, there are limited studies on how doctors engage disaster-affected community members during the activities. This paper aims to examine medical doctors’ experiences in engaging their community during the rehabilitation period after a big disaster. The study is based on a more extensive ethnographic study at disaster-affected health centers and communities in Aceh. The researcher conducted interviews with eleven community doctors and 45 hours of participant observations involving three doctors. Findings show different levels of community engagement in the doctor participants’ experiences. Most of them only ‘informed’ rather than ‘engaged’ the disaster-affected patient and community. This paper calls for the enactment of community engagement in healthcare practices and education.

However, teaching people with disabilities requires special techniques, and there is scant literature in the area. This case study designs and implements disaster preparedness training at a school for children with intellectual disabilities in Padang, Indonesia, an area prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. The training utilizes a blended learning approach called ‘Monster VIPs’ that combines various learning methods such as storytelling, posters, videos, puzzles, and disaster simulations to facilitate students to understand disasters responses. The training involves university teachers and disaster preparedness volunteers (Taruna Siaga Bencana/TAGANA) of the city’s social services.

Insider Dilemmas: An Ethnographic Study on Community-Based Medical Education in Aceh, Indonesia

This article draws upon two dilemmas which I encountered during my fieldwork in postdisaster area... more This article draws upon two dilemmas which I encountered during my fieldwork in postdisaster areas and regencies (kabupaten; second-level administrative subdivision in Indonesia) in Aceh, Indonesia twelve years after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people and left more than 600,000 persons injured and displaced from their homes. I highlight two persistent challenges regarding my position as an "insider" in this research: navigating between multiple identities (researcher, educator, and medical doctor), and gaining trust from medical colleagues.

T... more Abstract The death of family members due to a disaster is often unforeseen, abrupt, and tragic. Those who are grieving and are also patients present themselves to healthcare providers while experiencing the dual challenges of managing their grief and medical conditions. These complexities may create challenging interactions with healthcare providers, particularly if the interactions are imbued with asymmetrical power relations. Yet scant research has examined these issues, especially in post-disaster contexts. This study examines power relations in the interactions between doctors and grieving patients in post-disaster Aceh, Indonesia, using a theoretical approach that draws on subaltern theories as well as a framework from Goodyear-Smith and Buetow(1). Data were drawn from interviews conducted with disaster-affected patients (n = 11), to reveal how the patients perceive their medical encounters. Some patients responded by using pain as generic descriptors, staying silent, or overcoming their challenges. In some cases, some of the doctor-patient interactions produced asymmetrical power relations, while others generated more balanced-power relations, particularly when doctors employed power-sharing strategies. This study highlights the importance of doctors’ awareness and ability to acknowledge asymmetrical power in medical encounters with bereaved disaster-affected patients and a call for doctors to employ power-sharing strategies in medical practices.

Knowledge and attitude towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika virus infection among general practitioners in Indonesia

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards pregnancy-rel... more Background: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection among general practitioners (GPs), a frontline healthcare worker group, in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional, online survey assessing knowledge and attitudes towards ZIKV infection on multiple-item scales was sent to GPs in the Sumatra and Java islands of Indonesia. The associations between independent factors and either knowledge or attitude were assessed with logistic regressions. The correlation and association between knowledge and attitude were estimated. Results: We included 457 (53.7%) out of 850 responses in the analysis. Among these, 304 (66.5%) and 111 (24.2%) respondents had a good knowledge and attitude, respectively. No demographic, workplace, professional development, or experiential characteristics related to ZIKV infection were associated with knowledge. In the multivariate analysis, only contact experience was associated with attitude. There was a significant, positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores. Conclusions: Although knowledge of pregnancy-related complications of ZIKV infection is relatively high among GPs in Indonesia, more than 75% of them had a poor attitude towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika. Strategies for enhancing the capacity of GPs to develop positive attitudes and respond to ZIKV infection are needed.

Natural disasters may have perplexing effects on the lives of those who live through them, in phy... more Natural disasters may have perplexing effects on the lives of those who live through them, in physical, mental and emotional ways. For years researchers have explored the long-term health impact of disasters, which can include anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. These conditions may manifest and be observed for many years after traumatic events. Awareness of these conditions is vital for researchers who immerse themselves in observational research involving disaster-affected participants. These researchers should be prepared to deal with potential problems related to the specific conditions in the field, and also within themselves as researchers. This article draws on autoethnography and reflexive practices to explore the process of employing ethnographic methods while researching medical education during fieldwork in Aceh, Indonesia. I highlight three persistent dilemmas: engaging with safety protocols, building rapport with vulnerable participants, and preventing myself from secondary traumatic stress. Reflecting on my experiences, I came to realize the importance of probing not only the gaps and problems in the core domain of research, but to also probe participants' problems, as well as their own predicaments.

Knowledge towards Zika among medical students, interns and general practitioners in Indonesia: A cross-sectional study in Aceh

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge towards Zika among medical... more Background: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge towards Zika among medical students, medical interns and general practitioners (GPs) in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Aceh province of Indonesia in 2016. A set of validated questionnaire, consisting 24 questions, was used to assess the knowledge. Logistic regression was used to estimate the differences in knowledge between groups. Results: A total of 1031 participants were included in the final analysis in which most of them were medical student (39.7%), followed by GPs (37.7%) and medical intern (22.6%). Approximately 17%, 19%, and 64% of the medical students, interns and GPs had good knowledge, respectively. The knowledge level of medical student and medical interns was roughly equivalent. Medical students and medical interns had significantly lower odds of having a good knowledge compared to GPs, OR: 0.12 (95%CI: 0.08-0.16) and OR: 0.13 (95%CI: 0.09-0.20), respectively. Conclusion: General practitioners have greater knowledge of Zika than medical students or interns, possibly as a result of clinical experiences or exposure to learning. Inclusion of Zika learning materials in the national medical curriculum could improve knowledge of Zika and the ability of the health care workforce to respond to future outbreaks.

However, teaching people with disabilities requires special techniques, and there is scant literature in the area. This case study designs and implements disaster preparedness training at a school for children with intellectual disabilities in Padang, Indonesia, an area prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. The training utilizes a blended learning approach called ‘Monster VIPs’ that combines various learning methods such as storytelling, posters, videos, puzzles, and disaster simulations to facilitate students to understand disasters responses. The training involves university teachers and disaster preparedness volunteers (Taruna Siaga Bencana/TAGANA) of the city’s social services.

I highlight two persistent challenges regarding my position as an "insider" in this research: navigating between multiple identities (researcher, educator, and medical doctor), and gaining trust from medical colleagues.

T... more Abstract The death of family members due to a disaster is often unforeseen, abrupt, and tragic. Those who are grieving and are also patients present themselves to healthcare providers while experiencing the dual challenges of managing their grief and medical conditions. These complexities may create challenging interactions with healthcare providers, particularly if the interactions are imbued with asymmetrical power relations. Yet scant research has examined these issues, especially in post-disaster contexts. This study examines power relations in the interactions between doctors and grieving patients in post-disaster Aceh, Indonesia, using a theoretical approach that draws on subaltern theories as well as a framework from Goodyear-Smith and Buetow(1). Data were drawn from interviews conducted with disaster-affected patients (n = 11), to reveal how the patients perceive their medical encounters. Some patients responded by using pain as generic descriptors, staying silent, or overcoming their challenges. In some cases, some of the doctor-patient interactions produced asymmetrical power relations, while others generated more balanced-power relations, particularly when doctors employed power-sharing strategies. This study highlights the importance of doctors’ awareness and ability to acknowledge asymmetrical power in medical encounters with bereaved disaster-affected patients and a call for doctors to employ power-sharing strategies in medical practices.

Knowledge and attitude towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika virus infection among general practitioners in Indonesia

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards pregnancy-rel... more Background: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection among general practitioners (GPs), a frontline healthcare worker group, in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional, online survey assessing knowledge and attitudes towards ZIKV infection on multiple-item scales was sent to GPs in the Sumatra and Java islands of Indonesia. The associations between independent factors and either knowledge or attitude were assessed with logistic regressions. The correlation and association between knowledge and attitude were estimated. Results: We included 457 (53.7%) out of 850 responses in the analysis. Among these, 304 (66.5%) and 111 (24.2%) respondents had a good knowledge and attitude, respectively. No demographic, workplace, professional development, or experiential characteristics related to ZIKV infection were associated with knowledge. In the multivariate analysis, only contact experience was associated with attitude. There was a significant, positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores. Conclusions: Although knowledge of pregnancy-related complications of ZIKV infection is relatively high among GPs in Indonesia, more than 75% of them had a poor attitude towards pregnancy-related issues of Zika. Strategies for enhancing the capacity of GPs to develop positive attitudes and respond to ZIKV infection are needed.

Natural disasters may have perplexing effects on the lives of those who live through them, in phy... more Natural disasters may have perplexing effects on the lives of those who live through them, in physical, mental and emotional ways. For years researchers have explored the long-term health impact of disasters, which can include anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. These conditions may manifest and be observed for many years after traumatic events. Awareness of these conditions is vital for researchers who immerse themselves in observational research involving disaster-affected participants. These researchers should be prepared to deal with potential problems related to the specific conditions in the field, and also within themselves as researchers. This article draws on autoethnography and reflexive practices to explore the process of employing ethnographic methods while researching medical education during fieldwork in Aceh, Indonesia. I highlight three persistent dilemmas: engaging with safety protocols, building rapport with vulnerable participants, and preventing myself from secondary traumatic stress. Reflecting on my experiences, I came to realize the importance of probing not only the gaps and problems in the core domain of research, but to also probe participants' problems, as well as their own predicaments.

Knowledge towards Zika among medical students, interns and general practitioners in Indonesia: A cross-sectional study in Aceh

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge towards Zika among medical... more Background: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge towards Zika among medical students, medical interns and general practitioners (GPs) in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Aceh province of Indonesia in 2016. A set of validated questionnaire, consisting 24 questions, was used to assess the knowledge. Logistic regression was used to estimate the differences in knowledge between groups. Results: A total of 1031 participants were included in the final analysis in which most of them were medical student (39.7%), followed by GPs (37.7%) and medical intern (22.6%). Approximately 17%, 19%, and 64% of the medical students, interns and GPs had good knowledge, respectively. The knowledge level of medical student and medical interns was roughly equivalent. Medical students and medical interns had significantly lower odds of having a good knowledge compared to GPs, OR: 0.12 (95%CI: 0.08-0.16) and OR: 0.13 (95%CI: 0.09-0.20), respectively. Conclusion: General practitioners have greater knowledge of Zika than medical students or interns, possibly as a result of clinical experiences or exposure to learning. Inclusion of Zika learning materials in the national medical curriculum could improve knowledge of Zika and the ability of the health care workforce to respond to future outbreaks.

Walaupun jarang ditetapkan sebagai Kejadian Luar Biasa (KLB), namun kerugian moral dan material yang disebabkan oleh DBD cukup besar. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan pendekatan cross-sectional desain yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran dan hubungan antara pengetahuan, sikap dan perilaku masyarakat dalam upaya pencegahan DBD. Pengumpulan data telah dilakukan tanggal 22 Desember 2010 sampai 2 Januari 2011 di Kota Banda Aceh dan Kabupaten Aceh Utara. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan cara stratified random sampling pada 200 responden ibu rumah tangga di kedua daerah tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah kuesioner dan lembaran observasi. Hasil penelitian dianalisa dengan metode statistik Chi-Square (x 2) untuk melihat hubungan antara pengetahuan, sikap, dan perilaku masyarakat di Kabupaten Aceh Utara dan Kota Banda Aceh terhadap pencegahan DBD. Dari hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa masih rendahnya pengetahuan masyarakat terhadap upaya pencegahan DBD, yang akhirnya berpengaruh pada sikap dan perilaku mereka. Dari analisa bivariat ditemukan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara pengetahuan terhadap sikap responden dalam pencegahan DBD (x 2 =5,653, p = 0,017), terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara pengetahuan terhadap perilaku responden dalam pencegahan DBD (x 2 =25,209, p = 0,000) serta terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara sikap terhadap perilaku responden dalam pencegahan DBD (x 2 =17,271, p = 0,000). Penelitian ini merekomendasikan pada pembuat kebijakan dan komponen-komponen masyarakat lainnya untuk meningkatkan upaya-upaya yang dapat memperbaiki pengetahuan masyarakat tentang DBD sehingga dapat memperbaiki sikap dan perilaku mereka. The human casualties and socioeconomic damage associated with the Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquak... more The human casualties and socioeconomic damage associated with the Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake of 26 December 2004 and the Indian Ocean Tsunami that resulted from it inspired a local health education institution to redesign its curriculum. In order to improve its ability to manage disasters, a design team was tasked with designing a disaster management block based upon current learning theories. This block needed to meet the objectives of the faculty and stakeholders, as well as be able to be easily implemented by the university and its faculty. The team began the course design with a problem statement, and then refined the method, setting, and user. Finally, the team evaluated and implemented the design. The disaster management block primarily used a constructive approach, and partly incorporated a behaviorist approach. Guided by the learning concepts of constructive, collaborative, and contextual learning as well as by community-based education, the team carefully planned selected instructional formats, including tutorial discussions, simulations, practical training session, lectures and field trips. Evaluation was carried out qualitatively by conducting focus group discussions and interviews involving students, block designers, tutors, instructors and lecturers. The results were discussed and summarized as lessons learned for the purpose of implementing an improved course in the future and in order to contribute to the efforts of other educational institutions, (especially ones focused on health education), who are interested in the development of disaster management programs.

This study is a qualitative research, aimed to evaluate the quality of test on disaster management block. The quality of the test was evaluated using the qualitative method by deep interviewing 5 criteria of students. The result was analyzed using Miles and Huberman method and the themes emerged were: 1) The test item in disaster management block were fairly easy 2) Test items were in accordance with the competence of undergraduate, 3) The test item were congruent with the content material taught in this block. However, there were some weaknesses, including 1) There were repeated items, 2) There was format of question that complicates matters without a clear purpose, 3) There were 'easy to predict' item questions, 4) Lack of variation of format. These problems might cause low discriminant items. A recommendation including continues improvement of item developers' capability by integrating it within the curriculum for faculty development programs.
