Under the direction of Mel Gibson, ‘Flight Risk’ takes audiences on a suspenseful journey. An Air Marshal tasked with transporting a fugitive across the vast Alaskan wilderness via a small plane gets unsettled when she begins to doubt the true identity of their pilot. Mark Wahlberg takes on the lead role in this gripping thriller and plays the pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial. The cast also includes Michelle Dockery, Topher Grace, and Monib Abhat. 2. Play Dirty (TBA)
While the title says ‘Play Dirty,’ this Shane Black directorial follows a professional thief named Parker (played by Wahlberg) who likes to do work straightforwardly and does not tolerate any nonsense. Moreover, he is deadly. This is not the first time we will see the character created by author Donald E. Westlake in 1962 for his crime fiction novels. Before Wahlberg, Jason Statham and Mel Gibson also played the characters in Westlake’s novel adaptations.
Other than Wahlberg, the cast includes Keegan-Michael Key, Dermot Mulroney, Tony Shalhoub, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Jane, and LaKeith Stanfield. Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to play the main role, but now he stands as a producer with his wife Susan via their Team Downey banner. The Amazon MGM Studios project is currently in its post-production phase, and we have yet to find out when it will come out.
3. Balls Up (TBA)
Amazon MGM-Skydance crime action-comedy ‘Balls Up’ is currently undergoing production, helmed by Peter Farrelly, based on a script by ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Alongside Wahlberg, the cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Molly Shannon, Benjamin Bratt, Daniela Melchior, and Matuse.
The story follows two American marketing executives, fired after losing a client sponsorship, who go to a major soccer match. The stunts they pull there in their drunken state turn them into fugitives who every person in the country is looking for. While no characters have been revealed, we can expect Wahlberg to be one of the executives. More concrete details on this project are awaited, including a release date.
4. Weekend Warriors (TBA)
Written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, ‘Weekend Warriors’ is an upcoming Apple Original Films-backed comedy-drama based on the German film ‘Weekend Rebels’ (2023), which itself is based on the true story of Mirco and his autistic son Jason von Juterzcenka as revealed in their autobiographical book ‘Wir Wochenendrebellen.’
In the German drama, the father takes his son to every Premiere League soccer club so that the latter can pick his favorite team. In the Wahlberg starrer, the father takes his son to every NBA team for the same, given that The SpringHill Company, co-founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, is co-producing it. Other than Wahlberg, no other cast member has been revealed yet. Currently in its pre-production stage, the film awaits production and a potential release date.
5. The Six Billion Dollar Man (TBA)
Details of the storyline are kept under wraps but ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ serves as a modern adaptation of the beloved ’70s science fiction TV series by the same name. The film, directed by Travis Knight, stars Wahlberg in the lead role as Steve Austin, a former astronaut and USAF Colonel. In the original show, Austin gets “rebuilt” with bionic implants after a flight accident, only to garner superhuman strength, speed, and vision. The actor also takes on a producer’s role. At present, the project is in the pre-production phase and further developments are awaited.
