Got a Tip?

‘Goodbye June’: Kate Winslet To Make Feature Directorial Debut At Netflix

After spending most of her professional career in front of the camera, Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”) is set to make her first feature film effort as a director with “Goodbye June.” That exciting news hails from THR with streaming giant Netflix partnering with the new director for the family drama.

Not only that, but we’ll see Winslet take part as an actress among fellow co-stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Helen Mirren.

Joe Anders, Winslet’s son with ex-husband Sam Mendes, wrote the script for “Goodbye June.” The modern-set family drama is described by Netflix as a “touching, yet humorous” drama, “which sees a fractured group of siblings pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.”

While many actors don’t tend to dip their toes into directing it is becoming increasingly common these days to see actors making the switch or giving it a shot. We’ve seen the likes of Brie Larson, Angelina Jolie, Michael B. Jordan, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Greta Gerwig, and Olivia Wilde taking on directorial roles in the industry after being mostly known for their acting (many working with streamers like Netflix).

Winslet most recently starred in the WWII photographer biopic “Lee,” she led the HBO fictional political thriller The Regime,” and teamed with Ed Solomon for the Hulu/A24 series The Spot.”

Filming on “Goodbye June” will begin soon with cameras said to be rolling in the United Kingdom.

Will directing become a new regular thing for Winslet? The critical response and viewership to “Goodbye June” on Netflix will likely have a lot to do with that. However, there is the possibility that more directing projects or an overall deal could arise before the film’s release on the streamer.
