journal-styled mystery warrior cats webcomic - complete

Alone in the middle of a desolate wasteland, BarrenClan is a hardy and irritable group of cats. They have lived there for generations, and eke out survival in this unforgiving land. But one of their new apprentices, the bold and curious Pinepaw, is determined to discover the terrible truths buried under the sand, as well as rise to meet the changes coming to his Clan.

Oh hey, thanks for reminding me! I did always intend to share those, and since we are in an Economic State Of A Sort right now, I'm offering them for download on my Patreon at the lowest tier ($1).

Check them out if you want to read PATFW as its full text version, with some bonus scripting directions, or the notes document I used to organize my plotlines and ideas!

i know itโ€™s super duper early to be asking about your new cat comic, but will you be posting that on your main tumblr page or will it have its own?

It'll be going onto my main Tumblr blog, @razmerry. Three blogs is already enough for me, I don't want to make more. As such though I would appreciate asks about it not being sent to this blog, which is supposed to stay on topic about PATFW.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Since slugpelt was in such a depressive state when she had her kits, was she able to name them, or did someone else (rainhaze?) have to do it? She stated in her epilogue that she didn't want the kits to be her life and that she didn't want to get attached so I don't feel she would've been in the right state of mind to give them names.

She named them herself. While she did isolate herself and emotionally neglect her children for a lot of their lives, naming them was something very much expected of her. I don't see any reason she wouldn't have done it. The fact that they are legacy names (i.e. they're named after plants/things that no longer exist in the territory, in a traditional BarrenClan fashion) could say that she didn't give much personal thought to them. Like naming an American kid Mary, John, etc.

Mm, not really. Because when I designed all the characters, I was not planning on turning this into a comic. When I did eventually decide to do that, I already had all the names and designs set and public, so I saw no reason to change them. The story was all mine; I just worked with the basic clay I already had.

The Darkprowl ending was so perfect! I suspected Deepdark might get a wasting disease from Rose, but wasn't certain how he'd get it. Love that him following the philosophy of "kill for any and all reason" and snacking on that crow doomed him to an untimely and unwanted death, love that he still found a way to die on his terms! Prowl following him was also so good.

But also between the Defiance falling apart so violently and Barenclan's territory full in bloom, there really isn't that much of a legacy he wanted to leave - save for two skeletons in a deathly embrace.

Also Ranger and Hacksaw surviving against all odds! Love wins twice in epilogue 9.

Spike and Fang still visiting them is really sweet! It's also a really neat parallel to Pinewing and Daffodilcloud in epilogue 10.

Thank you! Deepdark has always been a selfish and egotistical actor, and I don't think he actually cared about 'legacy' as much as some of his followers thought he did. That would really require him to care about more people than just his fucked-up wolf boytoy and best buddies, and he knew Spike and Fang would be able to survive on their own. Getting CWD certainly threw a wrench into his plans, but he would always make sure he was going out on his own terms.

I know everyone has thanked you for having various parts of the story realistic, but I don't think I've seen anyone talk about Pine and Corm breaking up so. Thanks for portraying that. Love isn't easy, especially young love, and it can be hard to get along even if you're "destined" to be together. Even putting aside that they both had trauma to go through, the first person you fall in love with often isn't the person you spend forever with. Having them take time apart to realize they do want to spend forever together is way more realistic than them just staying together the whole time. You don't see break ups that still lead to the characters being together in the end. Its always break up and never be together again or their love is perfect right from the get go. Its nice to see it be messier.

Thank you so much! Definitely something I wanted to include; in a lot of fantasy YA series, when the main couple gets together at the end it'll often skip forward to their future, implying that they just neatly and easily slotted into their roles without any friction or fallout with the crazy trauma that comes from what fantasy protagonists deal with. Not only is it unrealistic but I also think it's less interesting to explore. There's plenty of people who break up when they're young, only to recommit to each other later in life. I might've even stretched the time they were apart out longer, but I didn't want to leave Corm on his own for too long.

My hope is to see that it more often is represented! It's an important discussion.

I like to imagine Ranger and Hacksaw eventually died an undignified death. Or wound up starving, since thereโ€™s only so much theyโ€™d be able to hunt.

Not for the sake of Justice for Rainhaze, or Dustfeather, or Asphodelshine, or BarrenClan, but because I think itโ€™d be extremely funny for them to just get fucking got by a larger predator or something.

I did want to imply for Ranger and Hacksaw's ending that because they were living in a town rather than the wild, they were raiding trashcans and scavenging a lot more than they used to. Which is definitely something very shameful for both of them; alive, but brought so low. But still managing to find life's little delights ~ (psychologically tormenting housepets).

Probably they got shot by animal control for being suspected rabid, or something. Oops.

has barrenclan ever experienced a tornado? considering where they live they have to have lived through at least one

Avatar

I'm sure that RoseClan has experienced a tornado before, since in my lore the original Clans lived in that area for a very very long time. But probably BarrenClan hasn't; they've only been around for about 20 years (especially not in modern times). Tornadoes have a much narrower field of destruction than many people who don't live with them realize, I think; it's incredibly rare for them to hit widely populated areas, for instance. The 2011 Joplin tornado made so much news because it had been a long time since one caused that much genuine human damage. They're enormously powerful and deadly, but they don't have the same breadth of destruction as hurricanes or earthquakes do. Probably BarrenClan has been in tornado weather a few times before, though, and they may seen one in the distance. Hey, though; maybe RoseClan made the dens underground for a reason.

if u could assign cormorant and pine superheros which ones would u assign them!

OH MAN. You couldn't have given me a more hyperfixation and/or difficult question. I thought on this for awhile, but I think I have to go with my original knee-jerk reponses, with my finely developed superhero nerd instincts. That would be: Tim Drake/Red Robin/Robin (the third one) for Pinewing, and Shatterstar for Cormorantleaf.

Wait How did Hushpuppy die?

She starved to death. If she had just been by herself, she would've been fine - maybe even if she was still nursing four kittens. But the stress put on by Thrasher becoming more unstable and not hunting enough for her, plus her having to feed her kittens, all combined to be too much for her body. That's what this shot in the MAP call is showing.

Was there any character you wanted to have given an epilogue to but just didn't do it at the end of the day?

Cypressfoot, for sure. I felt that her story was well enough resolved through Cootstorm's epilogue, but there was still some interesting stuff I could have written with her. It would've been fun to dig into RoseClan's early history one more time.
