Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.

And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.

First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.

Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.

And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.

It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.

Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.

My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.

I'm now offering alpha/beta/sensitivity reading and photo editing!

I've adjusted my prices and simplified the system! I've also added photo editing because I love doing that too <3

For a mini breakdown of what I'm offering:

  • ALPHA reading is more for overall story analysis/concerns—this is better if you haven't had any feedback yet, if you're in draft 1-2 and stumped on how to make it better, or if you only want feedback regarding the Big Picture storytelling/arcs.
  • BETA reading is for polished drafts that you're trying to make publication-ready. It's more detailed feedback, focusing not just on story, but also on pacing, worldbuilding, plot progression, and prose/style.
  • SENSITIVITY/EXPERT reading is for representation of minority groups that I am a part of or stories that involve medical/science topics that I am an expert in. This is less detailed feedback, focusing on the representation and accuracy of these specific themes.
  • PHOTO EDITING is pretty straight forward. You give me photos (that you have the rights to) and I edit them to your specifications. I'll do just about anything from filters, removing stuff, touching up acne, adding text, resizing, for nature, animals, people, nudes, you name it!
  • PAY WHAT YOU WANT is for any kind of critique/feedback or photo editing service you want for any price. You choose how much you pay and I have complete freedom/control of your request.

So now that it’s been a few days since Nano announced its closure can we agree that the AI issue was secondary to the multiple incidents of grooming on both the main Nanowrimo site and the young writers program, and to refer to the AI scandal over the literal years worth of crimes facilitated by the site, from the lack of regulation of their YWP classrooms, to the months it took them to remove a predator from their forum moderation team, is ignoring the real issues, and that this pattern of reporting, well over a year since these issues were brought to light, is to ignore why Nanowrimo closed in the first place?

We can agree that they closed because of wide scale failures that created a hotbed for child grooming and other forms of abuse, not because of an overnight AI incident, right?

So Nanowrimo is functionally dead

Been a while since I used this account. Honestly, there has been nothing to say. November came and went and it was a bunch of sponsor run events. It seemed like Nanowrimo had already died in the fire, and it’d been revived as a shambling corporate zombie.

The Zendesk went down today. With the Nanowrimo Facebook account now redirecting people to the Zendesk, there is no way to contact support, apart from emailing (which has not received any recent responses)

The socials are dead. Nothing is being approved.

Oh, and they forgot to renew their charitable status, which means they legally can’t accept donations.

(They still are)

Unless something changes, my last post will probably be when Nano goes offline.

I can’t say I’m mad about this. Only about the lack of accountability for any of the leadership in this mess.

If I see one more comment wherein someone is calling a person with albinism by the name of a white-haired anime boy of the week I’m gonna lose it.

This genetic condition and the trendy physical aesthetic presented in fiction are not at all the same. Albinism isn’t just white hair, pale skin, or red-looking eyes. It’s complex and life-disrupting. Simplifying this condition to its associated physical features without understanding the medically-impactful comorbidities and traits is wrong for so many reasons.

Calling someone with albinism or any other medical condition by the name of a fictional character because of their medical condition is disrespectful and ignorant. Headcanoning that a character has albinism without understanding the many aspects of albinism is also rather questionable behavior.

If you’d like more information about albinism, or if you have related questions, I am here to answer them. I’ve answered questions for writers and creators regarding this topic before. Though sensitivity reading a whole book won’t fit in my schedule at the moment, I’m available as a consultant or to read passages.

For those requesting information regarding the medical implications of the various types of albinism, I encourage you to do your own research for details. I’ll hit the highlights here, though:

• visual impairment / blindness

• nystagmus

• increased risk for skin cancer

• photophobia

• prolonged bleeding (HPS)

• bruising (HPS)

• immune system issues

• platelet function issues (HPS)

• inflammatory bowel conditions (HPS)

• pulmonary issues (HPS)

• strabismus

… and more. Keep in mind, there are quite a few types of albinism and related disorders. It’s not all just “pale complexion and red eyes— cool!” Some respect and understanding would be appreciated. Albinism isn’t an aesthetic you can idolize or fetishize, because doing so impacts real people.

Periodic rent-lowering-gunshots:

  1. Fiction is not reality.
  2. You can enjoy things in fiction that would be awful in the real world. Like playing a murderhobo in a game! In the real world, being or supporting a murderer-thief would be pretty damn awful, while in the game it's just good fun. Same with anything else you choose to do with the pixels on the screen, like kinks that don't affect anyone real, so they're okay in fiction, but would be pretty damn bad in real life.
  3. No one else is responsible for your online experience. They are required not to harass you, but they are not and never will be obligated to not post about ships, kinks, or tropes you dislike just to avoid you seeing them. It's up to you to blacklist words or phrases, block tags, or even block users as needed to avoid seeing content that upsets you.
  4. No one can force you to read anything against your consent. Any content you don't like seeing can be instantly avoided by closing out of the offending post/fic.
  5. You are not owed an online experience free of discomfort.
  6. Nothing that happens in your imagination can ever make you a bad person. Words you write or read about fictional characters will never make you a bad person.
  7. The claim that media consumption influences real-life behavior is intellectually dishonest and serves only to excuse the behavior of real offenders.
  8. Fiction is a safe way to explore horrifying or confusing concepts. Therapists agree that fiction, even (or especially) about taboo topics is a good coping mechanism, especially, but not exclusively, for trauma survivors. Fiction is to adults what play therapy is to children. This doesn't stop being true if the work in question is of a sexual nature.
  9. Sex isn't an inherently worse or better motivation than anything else. A work written to create feelings of arousal isn't dirty, shameful, or in any way less pure than works written to entertain, provoke moral questions, or for other reasons. And worth noting is that multiple purposes can exist in the same story, especially fanfiction.
  10. You aren't entitled to an explanation for why someone reads, writes, or otherwise enjoys certain works, kinks, tropes, ships, etc.

fascism is fascism is fascism

An Australian fiction author was arrested over a book she wrote recently (read more here). The police said they did this “following reports of a fiction novel containing child abuse material”.

I haven't read the book, nor do I know anything about the author or what she's written beyond vague social media references. Readers are allowed to feel how they want about it, they're allowed to DNF it and give it bomb reviews, they're allowed to boycott the author.

But she's been arrested. She could go to jail for writing fiction. This is terrifying and it should be terrifying to everyone.

You know what books get banned if we ban CSA in books? The Colour Purple. Beloved. Lolita. Any memoirs from CSA victims.

And I know there'll be some internet warrior out there ready to tell me all the nuances and differences between these books and the arrested author's book: that her book sexualised this dynamic, it was romanticised, it was for erotic purposes, it was disgusting and triggering. You know what? Yeah. From what little I've seen, I agree. There's no comparison to be made between 'Daddy's Little Toy' and 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings'. But this isn't about that; it's about the law, which eventually won't distinguish between them if the vague definition of CSAM is allowed to encapsulate fiction.

You can't make fiction illegal based on your own personal distaste for certain subjects, even if they're presented in a simplistic or sexualised or problematic way. Conservatives have been open about their beliefs that drag storytimes are child abuse, that exposing children to any form of queerness is child abuse. What if CSAM expands to include that? Do we arrest every author who's written queer young adult fiction?

The truth is, our heads are on the chopping block next. They will come for you. You can't be a little bit fascist and expect it to stop there. Alice Walker and Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou have all been banned before, which is why I used their work as examples. Black women will be first on the chopping block, right alongside trans writers.

If you support criminalising authors, but think it should be solely contained to what you find offensive and dangerous, you are doing exactly what fascism wants you to.

I'm terrified. I'm terrified that I'm seeing hordes of young, left-leaning people celebrating this across social media, to see people who love books celebrating this, to see anyone saying that is a bad thing being shut down and labelled a predator and paedophile.

This author was arrested in Australia; in the US, Trump is defunding the Department of Education and supporting mass book bans to protect children from "woke" ideology; in the UK, puberty blockers have been banned on the grounds of "protecting children". All of these things are interconnected. In our English-speaking Western world, trends catch on fast. The guise of "protecting children" has always been used as a cover for fascism.

And the irony is, children aren't being protected. As someone who's worked in child safety, I know the things we need to do to ensure children are protected from sexual abuse - and those are social security, teaching body safety from a young age, and supporting parents to watch out for the warning signs. We need to particularly support communities of colour, particularly Black and Indigenous communities, and poor communities.

But of course, we defund education and healthcare and benefits instead, we blame parents, we hush up institutional abuse. We continue bombing Palestinian children with those tax dollars instead. We continue our White supremacist hurricane.

Governments don't actually give a fuck about protecting children. If they did, they'd help the children actually being harmed. But instead, they'll ban books and arrest authors to distract you, to make you focussed on the wrong issues. And this is a two for one deal, because when they decide that you are the problem, they can use your own logic against you, because they planted it there in the first place.
