first up: we’ve got My Body is Distant by Paige Maylott,

*important to note that only the audiobooks have unlimited checkouts, we do have ebooks of some of these, but those may have holds.

How do you get the books you have? There’s a few books on queer domestic violence that I really badly need to read, and I haven’t had luck finding them in your library or my local library. For reasons I won’t go in to, buying them isn’t an option for me rn. I realize being a nonprofit means running on donations and such so this isn’t at all a complaint! I love your library! I guess I just wanted to ask

hello - short answer: we purchase them from OverDrive and then we’re able to make them available to all the members of our library via Libby.

However, I suspect part of your question might be more of a ‘how do we chose what books to purchase’ and ‘is it possible for library patrons to suggest books’? In which case, I’d say we’re still fairly new! QLL is about 1.5 years old, so we’re still building up the collection - we’re trying to get all genres, all age ranges, formats (ebook & audiobooks), as well as nonfiction across the board: all queer! while being as smart with the money we’ve got as we can (because as you said, we are a nonprofit and primarily donation funded!) You can take a peek at our Collection Development Policy, available on our website, if you want to get a better sense of how we approach that work.

As far as patron input, we’ve done a few surveys both before and after opening, we’re also paying attention to things like checkout statistics over time. Folks can also use the ‘notify me’ tag feature to let us know they’re interested in a book we don’t have yet in the collection - we do see those and use them to help inform our purchasing decisions. and lastly, we do also have an acquisitions request form on our website that is another option to let us know about books you are interested in seeing in the collection!

First read for this years Trans Rights Readathon! Open Throat is this beautiful, fucked-up little book by genderfluid writer Henry Hoke, from the POV of an L.A. mountain cat figuring out gender, survival, and the knotty problems of tasty people. It's a funny, heartbreaking, poignant book written in an amazing prose-poem style and I really hope everyone gives it a read!

The Trans Rights Readathon is here!

I'll be posting at least one free trans book by a trans author each day of the readathon. In the meantime, here's a list of free books with trans characters to start your readathon! I'll update this pinned post throughout the readathon to show active offers.

Since these books are free, the best way to support the authors is to leave a review if you like the book. Happy reading, and please rec and review!

Certified Library Post

Libraries should be free and gay, and art shouldn't be reposted especially without artist credit!

This is by Sprinkles Studios/The Bearcub Book Den, who has both this and many many other wonderful library and queer sticker designs for sale in either their Etsy shop or storefront. I've bought many of their stickers and absolutely adore them. They're sturdy vinyl and so brightly colored, I can't recommend them enough.

Please support independent creators and indeed, keep libraries free and gay!

@queerliblib and/or @certifiedlibraryposts if y'all would be willing to reblog this version again with the artist's credit now added, that would be great <3 I don't have the reach to get this seen.

Hi, what's the best way to ask for a book from the QLL?

Avatar

Hi! we have an ‘acquisitions request form’ available on our website that we recommend using for requests. While we are delighted to hear about the books you love and will consider adding them to our collection we cannot guarantee that every request will result in the purchase of a specific item*.

We also encourage our patrons to use the ’notify me’ tag feature on libby. We are able to see those tags from the back end, and we do use them to inform purchasing decisions as well!
