Somehow still alive after all this time   Tag game friendly     I try to participate in Worldbuilding Wednesday and Blorbo Blursday when I can

As of late I've been finding that I have to trick myself into doing things. Like, I can't do things seriously anymore. I have to be like "Ok, maybe I'll just open the document. I'm sure I wont write anything. Just open it. Read what you have." and then I'm like "oh hey yeah let me add a sentence," and then I start writing and I make progress and it's great. But I cannot for the life of me go into the document with the intention of writing anything. Nothing happens. My mind becomes as blank as I wish it would when I try to meditate. When I meditate I think about everything that ever happened to me at all times and I end up looking like I'm meditating. I get an A+ in staying still, but I am not not thinking about anything. I am writing a fully plotted story in my head and as soon as I open my eyes I will lose that. The only time there is nothing in my brain is when I try to write but that is not meditative, it is annoying. Swimming is meditative. Swimming is fantastic because if you stop swimming, you start drowning, and therefore swimming requires a level of background focus and determination to live that just is not present in meditation. Swimming is also wonderful for enforced isolation, because if you swim far enough, no one will bother you, and if they try, you cannot hear them because there is water in your ears. Swimming is a lot like writing, which is the opposite of meditation, which is a lot like swimming.

what is THE worst thing you've ever drank. all liquids acceptable. please tell me what it was, bonus points for why

Hey whoa hi. Hello. I am looking directly into your ear canal. What do you mean you drank a tube of virus concentrate.

So, I was working in a lab, right? My job in the lab was preparing a pure, concentrated enough sample of virus. This is tricky since, y'know, viruses require hosts to replicate, but you then need to get the host cells (and the pieces of the host cells that died!) out of the sample while still keeping the viruses. Once I'd finished and the samples had been sent to the database for analysis as well as a second one sent to be frozen for future reference, there was still some left over that needed to be disposed of.

I, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, waited carefully for the lab director to be deep in conversation with someone else on the other side of the laboratory. And then I took my chance.

Test tubes, as it turns out, are really bad as shot glasses. Their shape turns any liquid inside into a stream, so you really can't knock it back quickly - it takes a couple seconds. Additionally, the best way I can describe the taste of virus concentrate was "sterile rot". A very unique kind of bad! Made worse by the test tube's inefficiency as a shot glass.

(by the way we were studying bacteriophages, not animal viruses. these viruses are too specialized on attacking prokaryotes to even recognize our cells as targets at all, according to studies.)

(but also like. if the viruses managed to successfully switch hosts and killed me with a violent infection, itd still be worth it.)

(for science.)

You have a fitting blog title

this post is getting 50k easy

most beautiful man alive. i am bringing him some paracetamol as a little snack.

@thetruearchmagos shockingly relevant piece of arcane art

I'm terrified to say that I think i know exactly what this means and am technically kinda indirectly responsible for helping this come into being

I gotta tell you, next to me, you are the most responsible for this. It's gonna be fun

Jesse, you’re forgetting that Dragons are not just beasts, they are inherently magical and they are of the element they embody, Jesse. An ancient white dragon would create an icy tundra wherever it built its lair merely by existing in that place over time. It is the surrounding animals that have adapted to the cold to even exist in the landscape of a dragon, Jesse.

Also dragons have teeth, Jesse. I don't think ice resistance is gonna be that big of an issue. The prey isn't teeth resistant, Jesse.

Small shaggy horses adapted to harshly cold climates are so woefully neglected in historical/fantasy media

It'll be like 'yeah this is a cold climate with exceptionally harsh winters' and the horses look like

instead of

(Yakut horse, Icelandic horse, Mongolian horse, Fjord horse)

Round. Is. Best. Shape. For. Cold.

Small and fat survives the winter. You want big horses? You need enough summer to feed them. You don't get that? Small. Fat. Horses. And those things go for days ON NOTHIN.

Friends described living under the Trump Administration as being slowly beaten to death by a rubber chicken.

It still hurts. It's still painful. But you keep hearing a synthetic BAWWW every time it hits you as a constant reminder of how it's the stupidest possible way to die.

I thought it was necessary

Bringing this back, the Department of Education is gone, taking with it my 40k grant for next year...

Was looking up on Victorian clothing, and it also somehow turned up something on the embroidery front. Probably gonna stick with the hankie, but the thought of a funny little hand embroidered hat will not leave my mind now

I was going to suggest a hat, but I thought that might come off as a bit funny. Also, hats are outdoors wear, taken off inside.
