That was a popular opinion back in the day? Huh, I even surprise myself with how correct I am sometimes 😎
I've never really thought about the 'why' too much since I don't play Minecraft myself, just watch other people sometimes, and it's been a minute since even that, but it genuinely made me extremely angry whenever the music came on when watching someone play, and now's as a good a time as any to ponder why exactly.
Minecraft is a more quiet methodical experience, so I think you'd want more low-key music with lots of breathing room, and yeah I remember the music being basic yet extremely obtrusive with its stream of jarring piano playing. One of the main attractions of Minecraft is that you have this big open world to explore, and that constant staccato fills in that quiet empty space in the world. Yes, the space is vacuumous in nature and does want to be filled, but the player is supposed to fill it with exploration and discovery, you know, the things you achieve by playing the game, not cacophonous literal noise.
I think that's why I get so angry. The music kills the atmosphere rather than adding to it. It seems that it's trying to add to Minecraft's sense of isolation, but it's like when an emotional thing happens in a tv show, and a character is like "wow, that sure was an emotional thing that happened, huh guys?", and you just want to punch that character. The game already spoke for itself, you're trying WAY too hard to get the point across. Rather than support it, the music is tries to speak over the gameplay, which is a cardinal fucking sin in a video game.
Grr grr grumble grumble ragum fragum...
And yeah, it doesn't help that the composition is very simple and repetitive.
I hope that video is not deleted and that I may see it someday... 😔
