A morning of sleepy mourning doves Feb 4, 2025
Bonus (not endangered) bird! I really wanted to draw a red-winged blackbird all of a sudden.
Growing up we had a pond surrounded by cattails in the front yard, and these birds were a constant. For 1 or 2 summers I went on a naturalist kick. Armed with Audubonโs field guide I traipsed around the brush to identify something. All the brown-feathered guys were too difficult to pin down, but the red-winged blackbirds โ startling in their blackness, fashionable with their red badges โ were there to show off. While that would be the extent of my birding hobby, these birds are always special, their distinctive con-ker-ee! I will never not recognize.
