the Kristoph Gavin as Kunikida Doppo au art nobody asked for

this is really self indulgent.

also, if that Japanese is incorrect I apologize, I planned on just smacking “LAW” on it but to try to be faithful to kuni’s ideals book (and the fact that LAW on it looked like ass) I went for kanji text. also the book is sort of edgeworth colored because it seemed right

Today, I’m thinking about Kunikida and Dazai’s partnership and how it’s not appreciated enough, even though one was made to suffer alongside the other.

This is one of the most beautiful aspects of their partnership and friendship, in my opinion, especially because we can see it in the way Kunikida checks up on Dazai every day since the guy can’t take care of himself properly, or how Dazai views Kunikida as someone who could be consumed by his ideals, so he tries to help him see the bigger picture, showing that he cares enough to prevent him from succumbing to those same ideals.

Unfortunately, some people choose to ignore this, focusing more on Chuuya and Dazai’s very different partnership, which is a whole other discussion. They are not the same people, and even Dazai isn’t the same with Kunikida as he is with Chuuya. This is because Chuuya and Dazai were not made to suffer alongside each other; they were made with the idea of being partners, the only ones who truly understand each other.

While this is obviously beautiful, it doesn’t make Kunikida and Dazai’s partnership any less perfect for Dazai’s new path on the side of good, compared to the one he followed in the Port Mafia. Kunikida is supposed to be the one with the ideals of the side that Oda wanted Dazai to follow. Ignoring this is just a waste of good writing.

Go read Bungo Stray Dogs, Vol. 1: Osamu Dazai’s Entrance Exam!!

Greeting gardeners! We are happy to announce that Damon Maitsu has been removed from Project: Eden’s Garden as punishment for his nonstop jackassery. Players will now assume the role of superstar athlete (and superstar sexpot) Damian, also known as the Ultimate Volleyball Player!

Reply by Project: Eden's Garden;

With his mesmerising looks and intoxicating charm, he is sure to outshine Damon as a protagonist! We hope you are as excited as we are about this change! Stay tuned for future updates! Art by: rewindsable

Headcanon that after this all goes down, Dazai sees fit to foster a sense of distrust of the government in Atsushi, and teaches him some of the shady tricks he uses.

(Look Odasaku said 'save orphans and be a good man' he didn't say 'pay taxes and be a lawful member of society')

And Atsushi, already with a healthy distrust in authority takes to this like a duck to water.

So Kunikda is like "WHY ARE YOU CORRUPTING THE CHILD!"

And Atsushi is like "Okay I understand why people join the mafia now, breaking the law is fun!"

And Dazai is like, vaguely worried at how easy it was to corrupt Atsushi to the dark side but is like 'all according to Keikaku'.

But don't worry, Atsushi's still a cinnamon roll, he's just a cinnamon roll who pickpockets politicians and doesn't pay taxes and knows at least three credit card scams.

Bonus, Akutagawa watches Atsushi pick a lock to trespass into someone's office and is like 'hnnnng'. He's utterly incapable of being even slightly normal about this.

This is even funnier when you remember that Kunikida hates authority.

So he's just at war with himself while all of this is going down... before giving up and lecturing Atsushi on the failure of public systems.

He can say that he was a maths teacher.

Atsushi's a sweet lil guy he just regularly comitts tax fraud and knows the cities laws (and loopholes) like the back of his hand.

It's fine.

So true. Kunikida is all chaotic good, and while he's anti 'it's FASTER to break into a lab to identify fraudulent data, rather than waiting for a warrant' he's also 'fuck systems of authority that exist to oppress'.

But he would rather die that let Dazai knows he approves, so he waits for Dazai to leave before sneaking in like 'Hello Atsushi, stop screaming, I'm going to teach you how to pirate textbooks from shady sources so you never have to pay for education in your life'.

Atsushi grows up with two devils on his shoulder, except one loudly tells him to never jaywalk because people who jaywalk will only find out the error of their ways when they get hit by a car. He views the law as more of a vibe check rather than an actual system of governance.

Yeses!!

Dazai has no idea until Atsushi has to steal a car and asks the guy if he's got vehicle theft insurance.

And just slowly looks at Kunikida with a big shit eating grin like "we all know I didn't teach him that."

ASHDGKGS YES, BEST ADDITION YET

Atsushi has been learning morally gray techniques from both of them, and they both are hit with it and just IMMEDIATELY recognise the others brand of moral vibe checkness.

Atsushi, with Kunikida: "Okay, so I had to break into a laboratory to confirm because they tried to fool me with fake data but-"

Kunikida on automatic: "DAZAI WE DO NOT BREAK INTO- Wait, Atsushi?"

Atsushi with Dazai, casually blackmailing a shopowner with about 60 OSHA violations and then leaving with a smile: "Okay Dazai San! Fujimura San said he'd fix those safety hazards, and he gave us the information on the criminal we're tracking down, why is your eye twitching?"

Dazai, fighting back an insane laugh: "I didn't teach you that flavour of breaking the law, KUNIKIDA!"

(He's also really disappointed that Kunikida's brand of breaking the law comes with homework, Atsushi has to memorise all the rules and regulations so he knows which ones he's breaking, and for what reason.)

My headcanon is that Dazai will break pretty much any law, he truly sees them as classroom rules written in sparkly marker but Kunikida will obey all of them, but completely disregard them when needed. His mindset is 'The law is important, so you should only break it if your agenda is more important'. So he believes in waiting for warrants, and procuring the correct paperwork when filing for arms/prisoner transfer, but if he gets a hint that someone has lied, or given false information, the safety is off the gun, and he storms in, all while filling in an incident report.

Yess!!! Oh absolutely Kunikida will follow the law until it messes with his ideals and than throw the book at you.

Both figuratively and literally.

While Dazai is just 🎉chaos🎉

Atsushi just absorbing all of this like a sponge like 😁!

What could go wrong?

Beautifully done highly recommend so so wonderful and the way you write Dazai and Kunikida has my whole heart.

someone rewrite the entire cobra kai series where miguel really starts the beef with robby because he falls in love with robby almost immediately and tries to pray away the gay with karate
