Yanli lowered her head at the praise. Mingjue was usually a man of few words, but he meant what he said. She also found him easier to read now that there wasn’t a battle going on, and he seemed to be fighting the impulse to stroke Jin Rulan’s cheek.

“Would you like to hold him?” Yanli asked softly.

“Like he’s talked about anything else since we left.” Huaisang muttered behind his fan,

“Shut up.”

 “He is in a mood today, I fear, but don’t let that deter you.”

 “Oh, I am sorry to hear this, young sir.” Mingjue said softly, his arms full of baby, “Yes, I am. Why don’t we talk it over?”

Jin Rulan answered with a series of gurgles and one whimper. Nie Mingjue nodded, holding the same expression as though the baby was a fellow sect leader complaining about the harvest,

No one looked at Yanli, which was fortunate, because she reddened considerably. Jin Rulan didn’t seem to care much about the words, at all, instead stretching his legs as soon as they were freed.

Mingjue slowly turned him around, supporting his head, and gently rocked him back and forth. Huaisang tapped his fan against his hand, looking bored,

“Aaaand…” Jin Rulan suddenly grew quiet, “My brother is a magician.”

“He’s gassy, Huaisang. There’s no magic to it. Especially not after I had to do this to you countless times when you were this size.”

“Dage!”
