Essex can be very cool when she isn't dying.
Essex is from BLACK CLOAK . Artwork by Meredith McClaren
Description: An illustration of Essex from BLACK CLOAK. She's dressed stylish/casual with a large padded purse. In her purse is two taka (they're like magical cats) The old grey one is sitting on top of the younger, smaller white one. Essex is looking away from the audience as she sips bubble tea. Her wings are unfurled but fading out to the side.
Black Cloak v2 is out March 26th! Here's a little video of me adding the final touches to a page.

"I am Diana of Themyscira, last of the Amazons, daughter of Circe, princess of Hell and witch of the wild isle. And you will not have this world while I still draw breath"
Absolute Wonder Woman by @1979semifinalist (Kelly Thompson)
I loved this first arc and had a hard time stopping myself from building every scene in this comic.
I did want to include her allies during this arc, so I also made Gia and Etta Candy, Steve Trevor, and Barbara Minerva
So fun!
Love that you took the time for Gia, Etta, Steve, and Barbara!

I have NEVER been more in love with a comic as I am with Absolute Wonder Woman right now. Thank you so much for writing this book. Do you have any interest in coming to Washington Summer Con in Puyallup this June?
Aw, thank you so much.
We’re having a great time doing it, I’m pretty in love with it too.
Unfortunately I’m not doing any live/in-person events/signings/cons at this time so I’ll have to pass. But thank you for thinking of me. Have a great time!
Assuming there’s an Absolute Justice League, do you think it’s possible Wonder Woman could be the leader? The way you’ve written her to be such a commanding presence and the fact that she’s the first public superhero in the Absolute Universe seems like the perfect lead up to that whenever the time comes. (Hopefully not too soon! No need to rush.)
I think it's possible, but it depends on a lot of things that are still happening and being decided as we go.
I do think this Diana is naturally more collaborative than Bruce and Kal (as they are right now) so it might make sense for her to be the one to lead a united effort, but there are tons of ways to do this and lots still to come -- we'll have to see!
Hi Kelly.
I was wondering if you have any info on the release of your Captain Marvel Omnibus Vol. 2? It got delayed from last year with a set date, to currently TBD.
Unfortunately, I have no insider knowledge.
This (recently updated) list doesn’t have it listed in 2025 at all (though it only goes to October). https://www.comicbooktreasury.com/marvel-omnibus-release-schedule/
It also seems to have fallen off Amazon -- it was still listed there in 2024 when I checked, but I found nothing when searching today.
I think you’re going to have to take this one directly to Marvel. Perhaps there was an issue that delayed it, or perhaps they felt the demand wasn’t there and cancelled it? If the latter, you guys might be able to motivate them by reaching out. I certainly hope it still releases at some point!
Oh hey!
My cover for Absolute Wonder Woman #8 has been revealed.
AWW is written by the effervescent @1979semifinalist, drawn by Hayden Sherman, colors by @jordiecolorsthings, and letters by Becca Carey
Description: A bust illustration in profile of the Absolute Wonder Woman rendition of Diana. Darkly colored in grey tones, she stands out against a red background, with the focus point being one starkly white eye turned to the audience. She is wrangling her lasso as it glows against the piece.
This arc of Black Cloak came to a close yesterday with issue 11, so I thought I'd share a page I really enjoyed from the piece. Shout out to @1979semifinalist, Becca Carey and Rian Hughes for a lovely comic!
I saw someone mention the other day that you have now written for Gwen Poole longer than anyone else. Thank you for by far the best use of her bubble-vision.

I guess if they mean I was writing her in 2018 and I again wrote her in 2024... yeah, maybe? But as for AMOUNT of pages I’m far behind there I’m sure.
“they just had really interesting chemistry on the page and I decided to see where it went”
That right there — it felt like Gwen was thinking that too, from how you wrote it, along with her comment about having equally considered America — aroace but romance-positive (narrative-wise), a vibe made text.
Personally I think what sealed the deal came from @handaxe’s ‘GwenPool Strikes Back’ afterwards, equally unintentionally — in two small details: Gwen ‘failing’ a dating sim, and her reaction to accidentally kissing Reed Richards instead of his cut-out — the confused “That’s it? You don’t want to actually…” that followed from Wade, to which Gwen replied “No, I feel kind of gross. I want to go home and cuddle Jeff.”.
Both you and her just writing Gwen as Gwen, and unintentionally naturally bringing this to light.
That’s great to hear. It’s nice when trying to feel (and listen) what the story and characters are trying to tell you and following their lead pays off. I’m especially glad in this case.
I have been wondering — what did you think of how you wrote the relationship of Gwen Poole and Quentin Quire in ‘West Coast Avengers’ causing the ace reading of her character to skyrocket within the fandom over the following five years (before it was ultimately canonised)? Did you know taking a narrative-first approach to romantic potential as Gwen did was a real approach a lot of ace people take when you wrote it?
I wish I could take credit and was that insightful/smart.
But while I wasn’t necessarily thinking of Gwen as ace at the time, I also had no intention of getting Quentin and Gwen together when I started writing WCA. But they just had really interesting chemistry on the page and I decided to see where it went. But I’m certainly glad it worked out the way it did and that it resonated for folks.
