โNo offense, but Eska and Desna are really weird.โ
Korra laughed. โNone taken. My cousins are weird. But theyโre really nice too, now that theyโre the chiefs of the Northern Tribe.โ
โThis invitation did give us a great reason to get away,โ Asami said.
Korra twisted the throttle on the snowmobile and the machine sped forward, as they entered an empty snow-covered plain north of the Northern capital. In a few minutes they were under the moonless night sky, out of sight of the glow of the city lights.
โYou donโt mind leaving the others behind?โ Korra asked.
โNo, not at all,โ Asami replied. โTheyโre having a great time at the ball. Why?โ
โJust making sure. This isnโt the first time either of us have seen the northern lights.โ
Asami stepped off the snowmobile and offered her hand to Korra, whom she pulled up from her seat and into her arms.
โItโs not the first time weโve ever done this, either,โ she said mischievously, as she drew Korra towards her into a warm, slow kiss. In spite of the cold around them, Korra melted into Asamiโs embrace, and they repeated the kiss again and again.
Above them, green and purple ribbons of light began to appear and shimmer.
โI was just thinking you might be getting tired of them,โ Korra shrugged softly, putting her head on Asamiโs shoulder.
โNever. It would be like getting tired of being loved by you.โ
โHmm,โ Korra murmured contentedly. โI donโt see how I could ever stop. Youโre the most beautiful, amazing, smartest, kindest person in this world, or any other.โ
The lights danced in the sky, among a field of bright stars. They stared at them for a long while, until Korra felt Asami shiver.
โIt is pretty cold,โ she said, pulling away.
โWell then where are you going?โ Asami laughed, pulling her back.
โHow about back to the dance? Nice and warm there.โ
โI would rather only go back if itโs straight to bed.โ
โThere are a lot of furs for blankets. Could get kinda hot.โ
โIf I have anything to say about it, you better believe it will.โ
Korra looked Asami in the eye and noted the twinkle in it.
โYeah, itโs time to get going,โ she laughed. โI love the winter solstice.โ
