How to color with Hue/Saturation and Selective Color layers in PhotoShop
@jackarthurdavenport asked me how I am coloring gifs for my rainbow gifsets like this and this set.
This tutorial is really image heavy.
I don’t like using new layers and gradients for coloring, I think the gifs look more natural if you use the colors that are already there. So I will show how to use only the maximum of three layers for the whole coloring. For this kind of coloring you have to chose scenes that already have the color you want to achieve in the end, or it contains colors that can be easily modified. I am going to show how to color lighter scenes and darker scenes. The method is really similar, only the end is a bit different.
Some of my lovely friends asked to show how I do my blending, so here is a very long tutorial! I will explain how to:
- Blend GIFs with lots of movement
- Blend three or more GIFs on one canvas
You will need:
- Any version of Photoshop with a timeline
- Basic-intermediate knowledge of GIF making (including cropping, how to use adjustment layers for color correction, applying layer masks, and placing multiple GIFs on one canvas)
Since the way I blend depends on the footage I’m able to work with, I often end up going in a different direction than I first planned. So this isn’t a strict step-by-step guide that can be applied to everything you make. These are just some tips!
Read the rest under the cut.
theme 221 static preview code: pastebin / google docs my ko-fi <3
- i strongly recommend that you reset defaults before using it, so the new settings won’t have conflict with your current theme, but it will work if you don’t do it anyway
sidebar settings in the appearance
as default, you can change: font type (you can pick any from google fonts. just type their name in the appearance. ex: Open Sans), color, size, font weight, font style, text transform, and position regarding the text mostly for posts and sidebar
- 6 sidebar links, option to use them or not also use icons or normal text
- option to use title url or not. you can also edit font style, size, position, text transform for title
- option to use sidebar icon (size 90x90), and the border separator
- change background color, border, and box shadow of the sidebar
- option to use or not the switch theme color *NEW
how to change the icons on sidebar!
in the appearance, you’ll see boxes with Icon on their names: Index Icon, Ask Icon, Sidebar Link 1 Icon, etc
enter here on feathericons and choose an icon. you’ll only need their name, then add that in the appearance. it’s done!
posts settings
- 540px, 500px, 400px
you have to use only one of the sizes of posts available. i recommend you to enable/disable all of them and then enable only the one you desire.
- tumblr dashboard captions or regular captions (with blockquote). also have an option to use custom icon in front of the username
- posts borders
- box-shadow, and customize color and opacity
dark mode customization
in the appearance you’ll see the colors of the theme, light is default (the first ones). if you scroll down a bit, there will be the dark option for them, all with “Dark” in front of their name
other options
- option to use underline on links
- custom controls with hover or use tumblr’s default
- option to use images black and white
- add background image
anything else you need you can send me an ask or message
SPOTIFY VIDEO TUTORIAL
Here’s a tutorial on how to do the spotify videos set! Like this birds of prey set or this anna kendrick set
i’ve gotten a couple requests to share the psd i used for the shadow fold scene in this gifset, so here we go! the fold is a nightmare (lmao) to color, so there are a lot of adjustment layers in this one. my goal was to take out the blues—we get it, netflix, blue is spooky and #aesthetic—and render everything else as true to color as possible. i’m pretty happy with the final outcome:
this coloring is pretty specific to this scene, but in case you want to try an adapt it, the layers are grouped according to what they do and numbered so you can see how i pieced it all together!
download it here ✨
give it a like or a reblog if you plan on saving it, please!

recently a few people have asked how i sharpen my gifs and so i thought i’d put together a little SHARPENING TUTORIAL for anyone who’s interested…
the first thing i’d say is to make sure you’re using the most hq images/screencaps/clips you can find. i know this advice gets thrown around a lot but for good reason! here’s a really good post with more info on where to find the best stuff to use. now on to the tutorial:
- we’re using smart filters in this tutorial which means smart objects babyyy
- group your layers if you haven’t already and convert the group into a smart object (filter > convert for smart filters)
- now duplicate your smart object so you have two identical layers
- apply a smart sharpen filter to the bottom layer (filter > sharpen > smart sharpen)
- my standard settings:
- amount: 500%
- radius: 0.2 - 0.5 px (see what looks best!)
- remove: lens blur
- “more accurate” selected
good work! now if that’s looking a little extreme don’t worry, we’re not done!
- apply a gaussian blur filter to your top layer (filter > blur > gaussian blur)
- set the slider to 1.0 pixels
- finally set the opacity of your blur layer to 25%
and that is it! your layers should now look a little like this:
the lovely thing about this is that you can basically keep your filter settings the same for whatever you’re working on and simply play with the opacity of that blur layer should you want to increase/decrease the sharpness!
fingers crossed this all makes sense. if anything wasn’t clear or you have further questions don’t be afraid to ask. happy giffing!!
UPDATE!
i just wanted to clear up a few questions i’d received over this tutorial, and also the very good point made by @justaleapoffaith on this post (this is what happens when i forget everyone makes gifs differently - silly me!)
if you’re finding that converting to smart filters is making all of your frames the same (i.e. copies of frame 1) then it’s because you need to be in video timeline mode first. if you haven’t done this before, don’t panic! it’s super simple:
- import your frames, set the frame delay to however you like it etc.
- group your layers
- open the group, scroll down, and select layer 1
- go to the start of your timeline and select frame 1
- click the COVERT TO VIDEO TIMELINE button just underneath frame 1
with any luck your timeline will have gone from looking like this
to this
**note that you can revert back to frame animation by clicking the covert button again BUT once you’ve converted the group into a smart object, there’s no going back!
now you’re good to go ahead and follow the steps in the original post
i personally love making gifs this way. the timeline is really easy to use, any new layers you add appear in this funky purple colour 😉 you can also adjust the length of the gif as well as individual layers (great if you only want a subtitle to appear on half of your gif as shown below!) and you can drag the red slider along the timeline to see your gif move
i also wanted to remind everyone (including myself) that different sharpening settings might look better depending on what you’re giffing. i put this tutorial together based on how i sharpen my lord of the rings gifs, but i recently made some shadow and bone gifs and found that adjusting the smart sharpening radius to 0.2 px, instead of my usual 0.5 px, looked way better! i have now amended the original tutorial accordingly, but point is there is no right or wrong way to sharpen. trust your own judgement and don’t be afraid to play around
again, i really hope this all makes sense. don’t be afraid to ask if you have any further questions. happy giffing!!
