The Orchestra Pit, Old Proctor’s Fifth Avenue Theatre (1906). Everett Shinn (American, 1876-1953). Oil on canvas. Yale University Art Gallery.
Around the time he painted The Orchestra Pit, Shinn was commissioned by impresario David Belasco to create murals for his Broadway theater. Belasco’s experiments with electric lighting are reflected in Shinn’s painting of musicians silhouetted against a stage bathed in an aquamarine glow. A female performer bends down to provocatively engage the foreground musician, or the artist himself, apparently seated in the first row.

not to expose my old ass (づ_ど) but 16 whole years ago when i was in high school, i worked at a used dvd store. i was obsessed with collecting these little treasures... i moved recently and found them all again, in some battered box. i probably haven't opened it in a decade. it makes me laugh to go through them, really! i was clearly...so gay, and i was doing my little best as a young kid in suburban america in the 2000s before the internet became what it is now just trying to engage with CiNeMa as i understood it, back when criterion covers had those black bars and dvd special features felt like cherished trade secrets. i spent my very first paycheck on that criterion of my own private idaho. i begged my dad to buy the les chansons d'amour dvd off of french ebay after a customer bought the copy we had in the store that i was saving up for. the angels in america set was selling for $30 brand new but there was a glitch in the computer system so it was only $2 used — i still remember seeing it on the shelf and feeling like i'd won the lottery. i played some of these dvds to fucking death, you have no idea. the scratches on these discs read like rings inside a tree. there are hundreds of them, and they're still most of my very favourite films ( ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈) it turns out i haven't changed so very much in all of these years~
