Transported by the painted walls at the Palazzo Davanzati, a house museum curated to the 14th century by an early 20th century antiquarian Elia Volpi. Much of the wall decoration was excavated under layers of limewash and augmented by artisans under Volpi's direction. I have used slides of these rooms in design history classes and it was a thrill to experience them in person. The filtered light, the soaring ceilings, warmth of materials - there is no substitute for seeing something in person.
