(Redirected from Supermarket)

Supermarkets are places where one vendor typically sells all sorts of products from all different producers. In some countries they are good for dumpster diving, in other places they are not. In supermarkets, all food that is thrown away usually is put in large containers at the back of the supermarket. Sometimes these containers are only put outside at specific times and dates.

Generally, supermarkets - especially the large ones - are not very sustainable. The food that is sold there generally is not produced locally and has traveled from far. Supermarket owners are also known to keep prices down for the producers, such as the farmers. Finally, supermarkets also want to dominate the market, hence pushing out smaller producers and shops. Therefore, many dumpster divers are of an opinion that taking from supermarkets is not unethical as you "liberate" food (see also "Shoplifting as Social Commentary").
