This is one of the main questions of the project LASIN – Latin American Social Innovation Network. Specifically, one of the main activities of LASIN is to design and run what are called SISU – Social Innovation Support Units, i.e., units dedicated to support the promotion of social innovation processes between university community members and external actors. As practical and social implications of this discussion, we propose the development of alternative solutions which intentionally focus on their impact on the five dimensions which constitute well-being for the users (positive emotion, engagement, meaning, accomplishments and positive relationships), expanding the positive social impact of these solutions in direct and indirect ways, as well as a creative framework which may allow for the design of new disruptive models of consumption and value exchange between individuals and communities.

O artigo tem como principal objetivo entender como a confiança é projetada em plataformas da economia colaborativa, identificando e analisando os principais mecanismos de confiança presentes na plataforma Couchsurfing, um símbolo da economia colaborativa e líder no setor de acomodação gratuita. O método utilizado na pesquisa foi descritivo, com abordagens quantitativas e qualitativas, através da elaboração de questionários e entrevistas realizadas com 106 usuários ativos da plataforma Couchsurfing. O objetivo foi avaliar a percepção dos usuários quanto aos mecanismos de confiança presentes na plataforma. Com base nos dados e relatos obtidos pelos questionários e entrevistas, foram identificados os mecanismos mais relevantes sob a ótica dos usuários, além de suas percepções sobre a qualidade dos serviços oferecidos pela plataforma. Em decorrência do tempo disponível, a pesquisa foi realizada apenas com usuários residentes da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, não sendo possível afirmar que os resultados sejam válidos em outros países, principalmente com culturas que divergem muito do Brasil. Os resultados servem como um direcionamento para futuros novos empreendimentos que anseiam priorizar a segurança de seus usuários, assim como para plataformas já existentes reformularem suas estratégias e melhorarem a sua gestão da confiança. No âmbito social, os resultados dão voz aos usuários da comunidade Couchsurfing, auxiliando no entendimento de suas necessidades e identificando os pontos fortes e oportunidades de melhorias na plataforma. O estudo tem como contribuição original a análise de mecanismos de confiança sob a visão de moradores do Rio de Janeiro, uma cidade com características adversas e graves problemas de segurança pública. Translocal empowerment in transformative social innovation networks

This paper contributes to public and academic discussions on empowerment and social innovation by... more This paper contributes to public and academic discussions on empowerment and social innovation by conceptualizing the mechanisms of empowerment from a social psychology perspective, and empirically exploring how people are empowered through both local and transnational linkages, i.e. translocal networks. Section 2 conceptualizes empowerment as the process through which actors gain the capacity to mobilize resources to achieve a goal, building on different power theories in relation to social change, combined with self-determination theory and intrinsic motivation research. Based on that conceptualization, empirical questions are formulated to be asked about cases under study. Section 3 then provides an empirical analysis of translocal networks that work with social innovation both at the global and local level. A total of five networks are analyzed: FEBEA, DESIS, the Global Ecovillage Network, Impact Hub and Slow Food. The embedded cases-study approach allows an exploration of how people are empowered through the transnational networking while also zooming in on the dynamics in local initiatives. In the final section, conceptual and empirical insights are synthesized into a characterization of the mechanisms of translocal empowerment, and challenges for future research are formulated.

Coproduced game-changing in transformative social innovation: reconnecting the "broken city" of Rio de Janeiro

Social innovation is gaining attention for its potential for system transformations. It is often ... more Social innovation is gaining attention for its potential for system transformations. It is often initiated by grassroots collectives, which can become successful through support from other actors and through certain game-changing events or developments. We highlight how transformative social innovation is a highly dispersed, coproduced process of changing social relations. This coproduction is unfolded through a case of interacting interventions in the socio-spatial structure of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Frequently referred to as a "broken city," the city suffers from various social challenges related to the socio-spatial cleavages between the welldeveloped and the marginalized areas, the favelas. Following a nested-case approach, we describe two policy measures and three social innovation initiatives intended to reconnect the broken city. We analyze their effects as well as their various interactions. The findings give reasons for considering the policy measures as "game-changers" that allow new courses of play. Still, the key observation about these intertwined socio-spatial interventions is that the broken city is undergoing more dispersed game-changing. Further observing how the reconnections constitute different kinds of changing mobility, we conclude with reflections on mobility-related game-changing.

Any future attempts to steer urban transitions will need to engage with and potentially challenge this dominant approach. This paper reports on four nascent 'new economic' logics which represent fundamentally different imaginaries of the urban economy. In each case, the underlying narrative informs already existing urban experiments in transformative social innovation, leading to the production of new patterns of (economic) relation and practice. Each of these experiments offers a counterpoint to conventional understandings of the neoliberal urban economy across four key dimensions: What is the purpose of economic development? Since its launch in 2001, Designmatters has become a compelling case study for how an educational institution can connect academic practices to design-based explorations of real-world issues and in so doing, trans- form the ambitions and assumptions of the College’s curriculum and the community at large. Resumo: Este artigo apresenta o cluster temático da rede DESIS, Informal, Formal e Colaborativo (... more Resumo: Este artigo apresenta o cluster temático da rede DESIS, Informal, Formal e Colaborativo (IFC), uma iniciativa promovida por um grupo de laboratórios DESIS, cujo objetivo é identificar ideias potenciais para uma nova geração de serviços que poderiam ser projetados a partir da perspectiva de comunidades carentes. Dentro deste contexto, o artigo demonstra os resultados preliminares deste estudo do DESIS UFRJ, grupo de pesquisa localizado na COPPE -Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Para tanto, o artigo desenvolve uma revisão da literatura de termos como design de serviços, serviços colaborativos e relacionais e comunidades carentes, assim como prepara estudos de casos de serviços que nasceram de iniciativas de inovação social dentro de favelas do Rio de Janeiro. Como resultados, são identificados casos de inovação social dentro de favelas do Rio de Janeiro e descritas as características e potencialidades de suas iniciativas. Por fim, este artigo discute inovações sociais nascidas dentro de favelas como inspiração para o projeto de modelos inovadores de serviços, capazes de desenvolver novas oportunidades para essas comunidades.

An analysis of these innovations indicates the emergence of a particular kind of service configuration—defined here as relational services—which requires intensive interpersonal relations to operate. Based on a comparative analysis between standard and relational services, we propose to the Service Design discipline an interpretative framework able to reinforce its ability to deal with the interpersonal relational qualities in services, indicating how these qualities can be understood and favored by design activities, as well as the limits of this design intervention. Martin Buber’s conceptual framework is presented as the main interpretative basis. Buber describes two ways of interacting (“I-Thou” and “I-It”). Relational services are those most favoring “I-Thou” interpersonal encounters.

On one side are issues related to natural resources, such as global climate change and adequate food supplies. On the other are problems with service systems, exempliﬁed by issues with the cost and quality of healthcare as well as difﬁculties with transportation and improvements in education. Studying the social innovation phenomena through the point of view of design, the DESIS Group at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University ⁄ COPPE explores the role of design strategy to promote and support sustainable change in Brazil—socially, economically, environmentally, and institutionally. This article presents and analyzes four projects developed in Brazil under such an approach, and discusses the theoretical framework supporting these projects.
