Evergreens to plant now: Myrtle
Myrtle (Myrtus communis). Given a sheltered position, myrtle will bloom for at least two months through August and September — flowers followed by small black fruits. It’s a Mediterranean native, grown here since Elizabethan times. Queen Victoria had myrtle in her wedding bouquet, and after that it became the must-have shrub, everyone claiming that their myrtle had been struck as a cutting from the wedding sprig.
