16K views · 6.2K reactions | Along with Spinach Confetti on Day 4, we also give our chicks a clump of clover from our pastures. Dirt, roots, and all ☘️ They love it, and are super interested in scratching through to find bugs and grit. Developing this instinct to scratch and forage early is beneficial to pasture raised chicken as it preps them for their life out on pasture once they're big enough to head outside. It's also a great way to get all kinds of microbiology and good bacteria into their system 🦠 And hey...it's probably super boring in that brooder. Give them something fun and interesting to do in between naps! 3.5K views · 404 reactions | Winter is coming so start preparing now. ♻️I like to reuse, and repurpose whatever I can. 1. I like this method of watering my chickens in the winter because it doesn’t use electricity so I don’t need to worry about electrocuting my chickens or myself (real fear.) 😳 2. I get extra fresh air and exercise as I walk out to the coop 2x or more (if it’s subzero) to switch out water. 💦 3. I get to check on my chickens to make sure they are safe bringing them warm oatmeal some days.🐓 4. I’m not using electricity so no extra spending.💰 If you have the right type of chickens for your environment they are suited for cold weather and can handle it just fine. They don’t need insulated coops, or heaters. More on this topic when I launch my free winter chicken guide later this fall. Be sure to grab volume 1 of my guides that shows you how to feed your chickens a healthier diet that’s going to cost you less money. The link to this free guide is in my bio. 14K reactions · 790 shares | 4 Features in Our Homestead’s Chicken Coop That Just Make Sense… When designing our new chicken coop, we aimed to address past issues and enhance functionality with these features: 1. Roost ‘Sh*t Shoot: We incorporated a droppings pan under the roost, made of metal and angled for easy cleaning. This setup saves on bedding and allows for quick scraping and scooping out the waste through a window. 2. Litter Shoot Door: This feature enables easy removal of chicken bedding without opening the main door or maneuvering a wheelbarrow inside. It simplifies the cleaning process and keeps everything organized. 3. Roll-Away Nesting Boxes: External access to these nesting boxes makes egg collection straightforward and convenient for the kiddos. No need to enter the coop to gather eggs. 4. Gutters for Rain Water Catchment: We’ve installed gutters to collect rainwater, which we use for cleaning and watering nearby plants. We don’t use this rainwater for the chickens’ drinking water because droppings from other birds on the roof can introduce viruses or bacteria. What features do you find essential in your chicken coop? Do any of these make sense? 32K views · 7K reactions | Hens tend to prefer having a rooster in the flock to take care of them. . In the wild the normal flock structure for chickens is an alpha rooster living with subordinate roosters and a small number of hens. . Roosters help keep them safe. He always keeps watch for predators and alerts them of potential threats so they can take cover. . Roosters help the hens find the right nestbox and will often stay with them asked for moral support while they lay their eggs. . Roosters help keep the hen on hen drama under control. . Roosters regularly put their flock's needs above their own and will sacrifice their own lives to save them. . . #chickenmom #crazychickenlady #friendsnotfood #petchickens #chickensofinstagram #chickensofig  #backyardchickens #chickens #veganfortheanimals   #roostersofig #rooster | Kelly Rutkowski 🐓Rooster Behavior Consulting + Welfare Advocate | Piano · Breathe
