This article examines common areas of misunderstanding between professionals and low‐income Latin... more This article examines common areas of misunderstanding between professionals and low‐income Latino families concerning issues of physical abuse. It argues that low‐income immigrant children deserve the same protection from harsh physical punishment as all other children. This ar ticle suggests culturally competent ways for counselors to work with Latino families to eliminate all forms of violence toward children including corporal punishment. Finally, this article argues that the systemic stresses on low‐income Latino immigrant families must be acknowledged and reduced when addressing child discipline and abuse.

The author develops and advocates a social constructivist view of crises-to increase clinicians' flexibility and self-awareness. and reduce unintentional harm to clients. Just as therapists are part of the problemdetermined systems they believe they are treating. (Anderson. Goolishian & Winderman. 1986) so clinicians intervening in crises are part of those crisis systems. Whether they choose to call situations crises or non-crises, and how they make that decision, influences the course of events. This article aims to help crisis clinicians, family therapists and others see and understand "their own reflections and their own intellectual fingerprints". (pearce & Cronen, 1980, p. 2) in situations which they may call "crises". In an ideal world with services available to all immediately on request, it might be useful to eliminate the concept of "crisis" altogether. But witb drastic funding cuts in social services nationwide and waiting lists growing ever-longer, clinicians need tbe concept of "crisis" to belp prioritize cases and avert violence. Forensic interviews with children for suspected child sexual abuse require meeting children "wher... more Forensic interviews with children for suspected child sexual abuse require meeting children "where they are" in terms of their developmental level, readiness to disclose, culture, and language. The field lacks research indicating how to accommodate children's diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This article focuses on language competence, defined here as the ability of an organization and its personnel (in this case, Child Advocacy Centers and forensic interviewers) to communicate effectively with clients regardless of their preferred language(s). In this qualitative study, 39 U.S. child forensic interviewers and child advocacy center directors discussed their experiences, practices, and opinions regarding interviews with children and families who are not native speakers of English. Topics include the importance of interviewing children in their preferred language, problems in interpreted interviews, bilingual interviews, and current and recommended procedures. Recommendations for practice and further research are included.

Family therapy educators frequently encourage self-reflection in their students and clients. Howe... more Family therapy educators frequently encourage self-reflection in their students and clients. However, little attention has been paid to the challenges andprocesses of the educators themselves. In this piece, four faculty members reflect individually and collectively on their lives and roles as educators. %bey describe familyof-origin influences, the intersections of their personal and academic lives, systemic factors in the professional setting, balancing work and family, hierarchy, gendeq and coping strategies to increase support and reduce competition. Kbbey recommend a deliberate process of self-reflection to other family therapy educators and offer suggestions for improving the organizational dynamics of family therapy training programs. For the past thirty years, since Framo's classic, "My Families, My Family" (1968), family therapists have examined the influence of their families of origin on their therapy. However, this self-examination has not, for the most part, extended to public self-examination by those who work as family therapy educators. Literature is sparse on self-of-educator/supervisor issues and on the ways we relate to colleagues and students. At professional conferences, we give and attend workshops on techniques of therapy, teaching, and supervision; but these same conferences offer few structured opportunities for us to look at ourselves. The American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) conferences typically offer women's and men's institutes and opportunities to reflect on the influence of various themes (e.g., class, race) on our lives; but even here we rarely make explicit the link between this self-reflection and our roles as educators. In this article, we four core faculty members of a marriage and family therapy doctoral program discuss how we handle some of the personal and interpersonal dilemmas that we face as family therapy educators and supervisors, individually and collectively.
