The article finds that in the setting of early 20th century, Alice Walker portrays black women aligning with the values of true womanhood. Walker portrays Celie as the product of Black Madonna Movement thus making her the idealized woman among her Black peers. However, she also represents the image of 'empowered' women in other characters, defying the 'code' of true womanhood as believed by the society at that time.
