In this study, we estimate a set of wage equations in order to study the employment effects of different unions' stances in wage determination as well as to investigate other characteristics of employment in Greek manufacturing. We discriminate between workers and employees (blueand white-collar workers) and between sectors in order to capture differences in the relative supply as well as differences in the negotiating power among the staff of the same industry. Empirical findings reveal that the persistence of unemployment arises as a result of the great bargaining power of the unions in negotiations at a sectoral level. White-collar workers exhibit a stronger negotiating power compared with blue-collar workers because of differences in the institutional framework.

What derives from the literature review is the comprehension of the relativity of each theory; there is no FDI theory that dominates the decision-making process of multinationals (MNEs) regarding FDI. Economists, MNEs and entrepreneurs may have a decisive interest in countries that open their economies aimed at attracting significant FDI inflows as a final goal. The investment opportunities appeared in various countries differ from time to time even in the same country diachronically.

If mandatory wage compensation according to this ‘typical’ experience leads to wages higher than the equilibrium, then the existence of this obligation is likely to be associated with higher rates of unemployment. The analysis of wage data from a sample of 1673 employees and the responses from 2370 unemployed people showed that increases in wages that are not combined with increased productivity can create distortions in the labour market which often result in layoffs and unemployment.
