Reasoning is a key component for the success of Semantic Web applications, as it ensures the acqu... more Reasoning is a key component for the success of Semantic Web applications, as it ensures the acquisition of addedvalue information from Semantic Web data. However, corresponding optimal algorithms implemented in state-ofthe-art inference engines often demonstrate very high worstcase complexity. Thus, reasoning problems are usually hard to solve and powerful systems are needed in order for reasoners to produce timely responses. Naturally, the physical and logical distribution of reasoning tasks could ameliorate this situation; however, the remote deployment of inference engines is not always straightforward and has been, until recently, restrained by poor support for ontological languages like OWL or OWL2. In this paper we present a middleware for supporting decentralized reasoning, following a concrete architecture that is based on web engineering practices. Many JavaScript libraries (JL) have become available in order to facilitate programming of rich c... more Many JavaScript libraries (JL) have become available in order to facilitate programming of rich clientside interactions in web applications. In some cases these interactions may cause non-negligible overhead on the response time of web applications, esp. on average mobile devices, that negatively influence user experience. An important fraction of this overhead is caused by some JL’s selectors on DOM elements. The aim of this work is to thoroughly study and evaluate the performance of JL’s selectors and categorize them in various performance classes. Towards this purpose, we produced a testsuite of 263 selectors to cover all possible kinds of selectors found in real world cases and evaluate the performance of these selectors on 6 popular JLs, with an enhanced version of slickspeed suite and a large set of jsperf tests. More specifically, the use of mobile devices is increasing rapidly in the cultural and museum sectors. Mobile sites are built on standards such as HTML5, CSS3 and other modern web technologies like JQuery Mobile, and they run on any mobile platform with a modern, standards-compliant web browser. However, the performance and usability of such sites are often insufficient. In this work, we study the requirements of mobile cultural sites, assess the performance of jQuery Mobile websites, investigate how the synergy with other technologies or techniques could be used to improve performance and conclude to a set of design patterns and coding practices, focused on jQuery Mobile cultural sites.

There are some research efforts on Javascript code and CSS code quality metrics, but none for measuring metrics of HTML5 code and estimating its quality and quantity. Towards this direction the aim of this work is to determine what characteristics of HTML5 code can be measured, to specify concrete metrics to measure those characteristics, to implement a tool for calculating them for a small set of representative web pages and finally evaluate experimentally the results based on statistical analysis and data mining techniques.
