However, information concerning the health and safety performance of buildings is not always readily availab le. Th is paper aims to determine and identify the factors contributing to safety and health performance of low cost housing in Malaysia. The research first identified the crit ical factors through a literature review of current safety and health practices fro m journals, thesis and articles books in order to interpret the factors fro m a g lobal perspective. A total o f fifty questionnaires were then distributed to relevant respondents such as academician, architects, engineers, building surveyors and property managers. In total, 33 co mp leted questionnaires formed a database for descriptive and ranking analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the reliability of the instru ments were greater than 0.80. A preliminary finding concluded three factors that the most dominant build ing design factors contributing to safety and health performance of low cost housing in Malaysia were structural and finishes integrity, amen ities and fire services installation. Meanwhile, it was found that three of the most building management factors were documentation and evaluation, building services and structural and finishes integrity. Collectively, results provide evidence that the instruments are reliable in the Malaysian context. Ho wever, a b igger samp le wou ld be needed to represent the larger population of construction practitioners in Malaysia.

Street lighting is an indispensable public service that provides a safer environment at night time to commuters as well as pedestrians. However, the Conventional Street Light (CSL) is not without some challenges, such as high energy consumption and cases of electrocution. Therefore, in light of the problems, this research is aimed at developing a new framework for producing a modern design of SSL. Some of the significant technical requirements and procedures for the development were discussed, which is comprised of LED street lamp chip, lamppost, solar panel, battery and controller. Also, a detailed comparison between the two types of street lighting was explored in the study - that SSL has the potentials of saving 64.7% of total cost compared to CSL. Some of the significant benefits of SSL are self-generation of power, which save energy thereby controlling issues related to environmental pollution. One of the uniqueness of SSL is its DC 12V working voltage, stability as well as human safety, as there are zero electrocution possibilities. This study thus proposed a framework of the 30m separation distance between street light poles, 9m height, light control system, 90W LED lamp, 5.4kWh volume of rechargeable battery, and 2 square feet of solar panel.

The Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) fibre is one of the major crops in Malaysia, which contribute large scale of waste that is durable and make it reasonable for utilization in cement-based product. However, the presence of hemicellulose, lignin and extractive (oil, sugar and starch) affect the performance of EFB fibre and causes an incompatibility of EFB fibre and cement. Hence, this research is been conducted to explore the suitable proportion of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) treatment for EFB fibre to increase the compatibility of cement with EFB fibre. The NaOH concentration of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% were used in this study as a chemical pre-treatment of EFB fibre for surface morphology observation and hydration rate test. Meanwhile for only untreated fibre, fibre treated...
