I'm a fandom oldie and a strong proponent of "ship and let ship", and I defend everyone else's right to ship what they love... But I think that gives people the idea that I like, automatically love every single ship??? Or every single trope?

I don't though!

There are a lot of fandom tropes that are on my "absolutely fuck no" list. There are a lot of irk kinks that are also on my "nope absolutely not" list, too. Personally, this is healthy. I'm able to look at something and go "Yep, I hate it, but it's not harming anyone, so continue to do as you please."

I think this is where the rubber meets the road for actually having principles. It’s easy to defend the things we like, just like it’s easy to fight for our own rights and those of people just like us. When you have to use logic to extend your sense of justice to people you can’t relate to, that actually takes effort.

There is a fundamental difference between:

"I don't like this ship"

AND

"No one should like this ship"

For anyone who is unclear on the matter or needs to hear this: fictional characters, while awesome, are literally not real. They do not exist and therefore are not worth sending death threats and suicide bait to real people over. There are 0 exceptions to this rule.

you don’t have to form your politics around pain and resentment. you can form your politics around love and freedom. you don’t have to convince anyone that your pain is real, it just is. you don’t have to follow people who lead you into despair. you dont have to hang around people who make you feel unsure of yourself. you don’t have to accept it when people tell you who you are. I hope you are surrounded by people who do what it takes to really see you, instead of just invent you and accuse you. I hope you know there’s softness for you in the world.

as things stand right now, i only ship two things BUT what i love about both of them is how much fun they are to think about and make art/stories for!

sonadow has great themes such as "sonic finding someone who can keep up with him and who would not force him to surrender or compromise his freedom if a relationship were to blossom between them" and "shadow struggling to embrace his lineage and how it makes him feel alienated from others, but finding someone who sees the good in him and treats him as a fully realised individual beyond the circumstances of his creation". sooo much potential for angst followed by comfort, and slow burn, and mutual pining. power couple. <3

mightourge has great themes such as "scourge breaking away from his past and taking control of his future by establishing the life he wants to live, instead of the life everyone else expects of him" and "mighty learning that, despite his super strength, he is not dangerous to the people he cares about and he deserves to pursue happiness, even if that happiness comes in the form of a mischievous green bastard (affectionate) who looks at him like mighty personally hung the stars in the night sky". scrappy, scarred villain who gets domesticated + gentle yet super-strong pacifist is such a fun dynamic to explore. i'm proud to have coined the ship name! shoutout to my fellow rarepair enjoyers. :P
