Comparing the texts of Jan Długosz, the Lithuanian chronicle, of Jan Lasicki, Maciej Stryjkowski and Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius, it becomes clear that not only the change in ethnic and political values ("Lithuanization", the strengthening of the role of Vytautas), but also common civilization shifts – the value of the individual and his decision and elements of written culture are recognized ever more. A careful reading of the story lets one understand the working method of the old ("precritical") historians and the boundaries of the historicity of the constructed narrative

The article attempts not only to concentrate the published and archive material, but also to present an interpretation of this phenomenon based on the presumptions of criticism, philological hermeneutics and history and phenomenology of religion provided in the sources. Here the Goddesses are perceived not as a construct of religious or worldview system, but as a component of the peasant world perception in the 16th - 17th c. Having generalised the data of the sources, it may be stated that the Goddesses are a cult lead by women, from which the men are not excluded. Although women take care of the worship of the Goddesses, the father of the family also participates, the mother of the family at her death entrusts the worship of Goddesses to her daught...
The first Prussians’ encounter with Christianity ended in the martyrdom of the missionary St. Ada... more The first Prussians’ encounter with Christianity ended in the martyrdom of the missionary St. Adalbert; it took place on the 23rd of April, 997. What provoked his martyrdom is far from clear to this day. According to some hypotheses, the Prussians were provoked by St. Adalbert’s unfamiliar pontifical vestments that he put on to celebrate Mass, or simply by his unacceptable appearance. The present paper draws attention to the beginning of the conflict with the Prussians. Its cause is St. Adalbert’s unusual behaviour – reading prayers from a book. This could have been perceived as a way of communicating with the supernatural world which threatened the community, as a magic charm. It is important to note the day when St. Adalbert was martyred. According to the Christian calendar this is St. George’s day. In many countries of Central and Eastern Europe this is the day when working the fields symbolically begins. Later sources attest that the pagan Prussian festival of the rebirth of nat...

A very diverse collection of early Christian texts, which are not included in the biblical canon ... more A very diverse collection of early Christian texts, which are not included in the biblical canon but may be compared to the canonical New Testament in terms of genre and narrative, is called The New Testament Apochrypha (Codex apocryphus Novi Testamenti, 1708) since the beginning of the Modern era. A prominent collection of these texts, edited by John Fabricius, had great impact on the term to become a common one. A collection of German translations published in 1904 (edited by Edgar Hennecke) also shares the same name (Neutestamentliche Apokryphen). A third edition of Hennecke’s collection, edited by Wilhelm Schneemelcher (Hennecke-Schneemelcher, 1959-1964) secured the term as a convention. The New Testament Apocrypha are understood in relation to the biblical canon of The New Testament – on the grounds of their underlying intention to be classified as biblical and their literary form. Eric Junod discussed this conception and in result proposed a new naming of apocrypha corpus; thu...

Construction of external restrictions and links forming a coherent whole began only in the second century. Aristides (the second half of the second century) was one of yhe first – and the first better extant –Christian thinkers that attempted a definition of the place of the Christian both historically and in the real present. Aristides' strategy is not only of delimination but also that of connections: his philosophical perspective is based on the Middle Platonism and the spreading cult of "God Most High", while the critique of the pagan religious absorbs its elements that are found not only in the Bible but in the Roman culture of that period as well. On...

Jerome of Prague studied liberal arts at the University of Prague, received a Master's degree in 1392, began studying theology and entered monastery of the regular canonists Norbertines (Premonstratensians). In 1394, he arrived at Jagiello's estate as a preacher and confessor, and then continued his activities as a missionary in Lithuania. In 1410, asked by Jerome, Jagiello funded the monastery of Norbertines, where Jerome of Prague took up the position of an abbot. Later he went to Italy, joined the monastic community of Camaldolese monks and became the chief of Camaldolese monks in 1413. He visited the Holy Land, met with Orthodox clergy in Cyprus and attended the m...
