Gregory Auner
Undergraduate degrees in Physics and Biology, Masters in Physics, and Ph.D. in Physics. Dr. Auner currently holds the Strauss TEAMS Endowed Chair and is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University. He also has appointments in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Karmanos Cancer Institute, and the Department of of Ophthalmology at Henry Ford Health Systems He is the founder and Director of the Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems Program. He has performed a litany of advanced biomedical research and development for the DOD, NIH, NASA, DOE, DTRA, and a host of industries. These projects include real time pathogen detection in fluid and air, neurological implants (under clinical evaluation), self powered (scavenger) bioimplants, and miniature genetic analysis systems to name a few. Dr. Auner has been appointed to the National Academies Board on Manufacturing and Engineering Design and has over 250 publications. His SSIM program has pioneered the development of advanced microsystems from the scientific ‘bench’ into the medical arena. He has formed a consortium within the Smart Sensors Program involving Karmanos Cancer Institute (Ultrasonic Breast Cancer Detection System), Henry Ford Health Systems ( research in real time detection of tumors in the brain and lung as well as the development of a heart assist implantable pump) and the Detroit Medical Center/Children’s Hospital of Michigan (Robotic Surgery and Real Time Surgical Diagnostics). His program is the main microsystems technology for these initiatives. Dr. Auner has over 30 patents (issued and pending) in the last few years for chemical, biomedical, and environmental sensors and microsystems and has been granted more than $35 million in research grants and contracts as principle investigator. He was recently appointed the Director of Research for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology at Henry Ford Health Systems. He is the Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of Visca, LLC, and Chief Science and Technology Officer for Medical Engineering Partners (MEP) in Detroit, MI.
