LEGAL PRACTICE
I am an Attorney and conveyancer, Director of Boutique Law Services, and, Appeal Panel Adjudicator of Wolverhampton City Council Local Education Authority. My career path spans the domains of private legal practice, Clinical Legal Education, Higher Education and the public sector. My expertise is within Access to Justice and, most recently, the Creative Industry. My achievements include the establishment of a University Law Clinic, the award of international research grants, a PhD studentship and European Regional Development Funding. I have also contributed to social welfare legislation in South Africa, and music industry policy development in the United Kingdom. Designing a Legal Aid Clinic, without any blueprint, was one of my most profound accomplishments. Being a new venture for Vista University (Pretoria), it required much research, innovation and resilience. strategically designed a Clinical Legal Education program which bridged the gap between theory and practice and provided access to justice to the local community. The curriculum and program had to be fluid to enable constant evaluation and adjustment for maximum impact in the community and for the students.
My law clinic experience at Vista university inspired further research on access to justice, which became the focus of my LLM studies (1999). I participate in an international social welfare SA-Flemish research project, which required collaboration with fifty inter university and Flemish researchers. I developed expertise in the field of legal aid within a developing social welfare system presenting papers at national and international conferences and was awarded a research grant to conduct social welfare research in Belgium. I have also published articles and chapters in books and influenced social welfare legislation through my contribution in the Taylor report..
My research on access to justice/social justice has developed from legal aid within the social welfare domains to the developing domains of social justice within the creative industry, which is the second fastest growing industry in the UK and leading Britain’s Global Britain Industrial strategy. I have been engaged in the industry as a legal advisor and researcher. I was commissioned by a local Studio School to monitor and report on a music industry/education partnership (2016). which prompted further research through Birmingham City University as Post Graduate Researcher). I gained further insight into the creative /Entertainment Industry as a student on the National Film and Television School’ Creative Business for Executives and Entrepreneurs. which gave me direct access to the media and entertainment industry,
Alongside my academic engagement, I have set up Creative Industry businesses. I have been successful in securing funding and support through the University of Wolverhampton/ERDF Speed Enterprise’s Business Incubator and invited as a Start up business by the Black Country Chamber of Commerce.
The Law Clinic, Boutique Law Services, is an innovative attempt to translate research into a social justice project that is aimed at unlocking economic potential of the creative community. These opportunities have gained me access to an emerging group of experts in the UK which is influencing the development of the creative industry by impacting policy through research and innovative projects.
